I'm at college aka everyone exclusively has a laptop (but me). I'll try soulman's method this evening. Also, I ran MemTest for 10 hours with no faults, just to be sure.

Ok, so here's an update.

I finally got around to burning Knoppix to a CD only to find that windows has locked the drives (i think) and I can't access them. So then I tried to run my genuine vista install disk, which froze, just like the win7 rc disk did. I attempted to boot off a thumbdrive, but that didn't work, so then I tried to copy the contents of the ISO for the win7 rc to an external hard drive, however I get an error that says it's not a bootable disk.

Since both dvd's refused to load, I'm looking at my DVD-RW as a source of problems. It's a memorex drive, I've had troubles with it in the past, but I'm not sure why the external hard drive won't boot. It's FAT32, has the boot files needed on it, it's marked as active...

So again, I'm really stuck on what to do. I should probably replace the DVD drive (did you know they're still charging an assload ($30+) for a DVD-RW? It's absurd.) but that's secondary to getting windows back on this machine...

you have to take ownership of the files on the win7 OS IIRC and while I could walk you through if you were in a windows based environment I am quite clueless in regards to Knoppix

Keep pluggin away man. I can tell you this though since i started playing with vista/win7 I have had many unexplainable issue with the DVD's and burners giving me all kinds of random crap when doing installs/repairs.

good luck

What if I tried installing say Windows 7 on the external HDD using a different computer, and booting into that. Then I could probably recover access to the internal drives, as well as attempting to replace the bad .dll file and hoping that restores things. The DVD drive giving me problems is going to be another issue, but I'd rather have the system working again first.

If my replace the .dll theory doesn't work though, I'm still in a rut, because I still can't find a way to repair / reinstall the OS on the correct drive.

Hi there.

Your problem is simple, one of the components of your cpu canot handle the extra speed.

Wheather it is the CPU, the MoBo or the RAM.

So set the speed to 2.66 and see if it work, it should, but after all you did it may not.

JohnDowe.
