WinXP - Shut Down Tweaking
OK for some reason my XP shuts down slowly....And this is on a FRESH install of XP.
So I look around for some tweaks...I find This and This First I use the shutdown tweaks...everything goes fine...works a little faster. Then I try XP Speed tweaks...Try to reboot...gets stuck on Windows load up screen...reboot again same thing..just sitts there for 5 mins. I try to do a Windows repair everything seems to go fine except now when I boot up it asks me to pic an OS system. Question is how do I get rid of one of the OS systems it asks me to boot on??? I went to System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and made sure to go to Fastdetect but it still asks me everytime I boot up. Thanks to all ![]()

umm look in c:/boot.ini it's a hidden file but it should be in there search for boot.ini to find out more about it

here is what mine looks like

notice that the timeout is set to 0 so that it basically just skips that screen and automatically chooses windows. I think you could also just get rid of anything else after the windows one to do pretty much the same thing even though i dont think it's necessary. just make sure you save a backup (which i'm sure you already know to do) |

Hey, Papa, the boot.ini file is written in standard INI format.
That means that every line under the [Operating Systems] header is a separate instance. You can safely delete any that you don't need. You should also check out Troubleshooting Shutdown Issues in my Troubleshooting Guide.

There are several "memtest" programs out there. Make sure you are using this one.

yep, just make it a bootable CD and set your mobo to boot from CD, pop it in and you're good to go.
