Another possibility

I suspect the cheap but vital stuff first
I was trying to Ghost an image to different models of Gateway computer. Upon doing this it would freeze on boot and it appeared to be mup.sys but that wasn't the case.
I solved it by popping the W2k disc in and proceeding with a normal install. When it got to the point where it wanted to start it detects an instance of W2k and asks if you want to repair it. Go ahead and hit R.

Yes, but nothing worked. I eventually had to re-install my os. Is it possible to remove the mus.sys and the winxp pro still work properly? Boot up fine and what not.

mup.sys... or worse?
Hi,
Last saturday, my WinXP system stopped working after what seemed like an innocent enough reboot.
Current situation, system locks up (even in Safe mode) after/during loading of mup.sys. I've tried to go into the recovery console, but with little success. The recovery console just freezes (or seems to, anyways) while examining the main hdd (a sata hdd, btw). The following remains in the bottom of the screen; "Examining 78160 MB disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on viasraid". The same occurs if I try to reinstall windows. I've let this go on for about 2 hours, but at that time my patience sort of ran out. Examining an 80gb disk shouldn't take more than an hour or two at most, even if it secretly running a Chkdsk in the background, right?
Next, I dug out an old 40gb IDE disk (Maxtor), and installed windows on the IDE. This seemed to work, right up until the point where I installed the drivers for VIASRAID (which required me to reboot). During the reboot, my system locked up on mup.sys again!! So this time, I unhooked the SATA disk, formatted and installed windows on the maxtor IDE disk. I haven't installed the viasraid drivers this time and actually disabled the 'unknown device -> raid' and now it seems to run (relatively) stable.
However, trying to get into the recovery console again now, and once I select the windows version I want to use, it asks me for the admin password. After typing this in though, the computer locks up with a blue screen telling me diddley squat. It, of course, tells me to take a look at the file mentioned further below but guess what? No file name mentioned, only a STOP: error, with several variables. (Shame on me for not writing them down though).
Oh yeah, and I've disabled the onboard Legacy USB support, and unhooked the extra USB card that connects to the Motherboard.
Does anyone have any further ideas? I'd be interested in knowing how I can get my old SATA drive back up and running.
Current config;
ASUS A7v600 motherboard with VIA KT600 chipset series.
AMD 2Ghz
GeForce III, DDR 64mb

I've had similar problems with a motherboard I have. I just didn't install the windows SATA drives and it seems to run fine. The SATA drive is my primary drive also and thus far I haven't had any problems.

Well, not installing the windows SATA drives would mean the SATA hdd not being available... And I kind of need that drive because it contains all my programs (and some of my old documents). I've tried installing the drivers from VIA itself, but that doesn't help any either.

Right... just wanted to post a quick update...
After some heavy searching, I found v3.1 drivers for the via raid (viamraid.sys). I've also upgraded my bios to 1006. Anyways, using the 3.1 drivers, I was able to access the recovery console, disable mup and run a chkdisk /r. (Which, btw, didn't find any errors on the disk).
After rebooting, I was able to get into windows. The only problem I now have though is that 'Generic Host Process for Win32' keeps crashing, windows keeps running into errors, and I get BDODs with the error 'DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' with usbport.sys. Upgrading to SP-2, installing the latest 4-in-1 VIA drivers, the latest USB 2.0 drivers, the latest SoundMax (onboard soundcard) drivers and the latest printer drivers (the last, in response to a MS article) hasn't solved the problem yet...
Aside from this, sound is also still not working (though during some reboots, it does, whilst during others, it doesn't). I've tried to change the IRQ for my USB controllers, but hey... they're not Plug-and-play devices, so I'm not allowed to change the IRQ (21) for those things...
I'm seriously beginning to doubt the quality of ASUS / VIA Mboards... *sigh*

We've just encountered this problem for the first time.
Several months ago, the video card in our machine has started generating lines and ghost images, idicating that its on its last legs. The computer then began having issues playing avi files. Then in the last couple of days, we have experienced Sound problems where the machine will have none, then hours later it will come back unless we run a sound diagnostic program from Creative Labs. We have recently installed new codecs to fix the avi problem which did fix the problem. Now we get the hang up after the mup.sys and/or spontaneous reboots.
My next move is to downgrade video cards until I'm back to a pci card.
Unfortunately my hands are bound due to our misplacement of the XP Pro disc we have.

MUP hanging
Ran into my first MUP.sys problem today. I have run every version of windows and have never seen or heard of this before.
Running XP Pro SP2 now. Everything was working fine last night. Shut down and went to bed. Home from work today fired her up
and things were fine - other than my task bar had changed from two lines to one. I was going through some archive cds looking for something. I clicked on a drive letter in Windows Explorer and everything froze. No mouse, keyboard, ctl/alt/del, nothing. Hit the power switch. Reboot and Windows status bar just keeps going and going. Reboot into safe mode - hands at MUP.sys. Get on another pc to see what this is and ended up at this forum. You all have a great many ideas of how to solve the problem but I liked the 'disable mup' in the repair console the best. I did that and here I am on the 'broken' pc typing this post. This is also all kind of ironic because I was checking archives and backing things up to get ready for my yearly 'wipe and reload'. Thought I was going to be doing it a little sooner than I had planned.
