Msdos compatability mode no matter what

This old pc im working on is always stuck in msdos compatability mode. I reinstalled wind 98 and its still stuck in the mode. Also when I try to install any other versions the computer gives me some blue screen talking about viruses (not the blue screen of death. I reformatted many times. Ive tried to install oses using other pcs and then transferring the hdd but the pc just restarts.

Sometimes "zeroing" the drive helps. You can use one of the free utilities available form the major hard drive
manufactures web sites. Examples are:

Seagate
SeaTools for DOS
Select option "Erase Drive"

Western Digital
Data Lifeguard Diagnostic
Select option "WRITE ZEROS"

After you erase the drive you need to again repartition and format it.

thanks, i tried it, but it still doesnt work. Im not seeing why this happens. You would think that if you cleared a drive completely and then reinstalled windows it would work. Also Another problem Im having is that the only os I can install is 98. I tried xp and 2000, and once the setup begins I get an error message that says " cant find hard disk"?

Never fear, I have your solution!

I assume you've tried to install Win2k or XP and gotten an error from your BIOS about viruses? Thats because XP (and I think 2k also) writes to your Hard Drive's boot sector... windows 95 and 98 did not.

All you need to do is boot your computer, enter your BIOS configuration menu (there should be some message on the very first screen when you boot telling you how to get there... if not, consult the manufacturer's website or google the comptuer model name plus "bios") ... and disable anything to do with "Boot sector virus protection" etc...

You should be home free after that.... I think...

Happy computing!

(oh and once the OS is installed... you can re-enable that option in BIOS to protect from viruses if you like)

Every operating system that boots from a hard disk can only do so be installing the boot loader into the boot sector inside the partition the OS resides.

No exception for Win9x.

The bios proection on the boot sector is just to prevent it from overwritten. To remove protection could very well allow a new boot loader installed.
