Can't delete folder in XP.
Hi,
I have had one folder where i had a monopoly game on my computer but after i uninstalled the game, the folder stayed. No problem i thought, i will just manually delete it. No luck. I get an error saying "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk"
Now a few things...
-The folder is empty
-When i try to put something in the folder it just makes a duplicate of the folder with said file in it.
-Deleting from DOS didnt work
-It comes up in a search
I dont know what to do, i guess it doesnt really matter as its taking up no space, but its just there and annoys the hell outta me.
Any ideas?

Did you try removing it from Safe Mode? What are the folder properties? Did you search for the folder name in Registry? It may be created by a registry entry and thus painfully persistant.

Enable BSOD: Control Panel/Systems, Advanced Tab, hit the Settings button under Startup and Recovery, and under the System Failure area, uncheck the Automatically Restart checkbox.
Also i searched the registry for the folder name and it came up with one entry called "000", type "REG_SZ", value "MONOPOLY" (name of offending folder)
So after i backed up the registry i deleted that entry, but then the folder was still there and still wouldnt let me delete.
I havnt tried safe mode yet, will try that soon and let you know how i go.

Maybe try Crap Cleaner and see if you can delete some missing/invalid/obsolete Registry values and see if it helps, or some of the other stuff it scans for.
Just make sure you scan under Issues, and backup your registry first.

I assume you already tried in Safe Mode without success but have you tried Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I had a directory that I could not delete even in Safe Mode but was able to do so with Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

i've done this before and it's worked when i'm in safe mode. open a command prompt and use the cd command to browse to the folder the monopoly folder is in (d:\games). enter this:
dir /x/a to see the SHORT FILE NAMES of the folders and files.
rmdir /s/q [drive:]path to remove the directory
rd /s/q [drive:]path
example, you run "dir /x/a" and get this for the monopoly folder: monopo~1
