resolution plays a key role here as well because lower resolutions are going to be more cpu demanding than gpu, where as higher resolutions are going to be more gpu demanding than cpu. So it is very important to note as if you are playing 1024x768 or 1280x1024 for instance, upgrading your video card wont effect performance at all. But if you are running something like 1680x1050 or 1920x1200, then the GPU upgrade will have a significant impact on your performance. But in this case, I would trust in SWK given that he plays the game and has a similar set up to yours.
But in the interest of what I would suggest if you are playing in higher resolutions, the 4870 1gb would get my vote.

That and they are very affordable now due to the recent release of the HD4890.

All that and it can fold too.
But if I was looking mainly at folding I would probably go the 9800GTX (what I have) or one of the newer 2xx and shop around for the best offer in the price range. One of these days I should try and play a game on one of these machines - but wait, that would lower my ppd. Oops, sorry for the hijack, I would probably go the 4870 - and one day they will release a driver to fold as well as similar NVidia cards. |
