actually, from what I heard its not 2 physical cards, ther are actually 4 cards, but set with 2 mother and 2 daughter cards. As in only 2 of the cards actaully plug into the pci express slot, and the other 2 connect to the mother cards. Anyone who say Asus's dual 7800GT card could tell you it would be virtually impossible to fit 2x 7800GTXs on a single pcb without requiring a custom case, as the dimensions of the card would be huge...as would the cooling
with a mother and daughter set up you could use single slot cooling and wouldnt need much larger pcbs, perhaps slightly longer but we'll have to see. Dells Renegade prototype they had on display I believe only had 2x 512mb 7800GTX, like those we can buy already, and Nvidia is to display the graphics system themselves.

Wasen't there a board with two x16 channels and four PCIe ports so that you could support up to four cards? There was that and two dual-GPU cards as well, so it's been done before. What a waste of money though.... lol

yes Gigabyte had a prototype they created mainly as a showcase for their ingenuity. I dont believe it was ever intended for retail market, but it allowed them to use 2x of their dual GPU cards, like the 3D1 series that used dual 6600 or 6800GT on a single pcb. Of course with some engineering samples people plugged 4x 6600 standards in, and anything they could get their hands on really :P
And I believe Asus had a version of their A8N SLI that would allow you to run 2x of their dual gpu 7800GT.
It is a waste of money for anyone who doesn't truely need it, but for the the guys out there buying up these monster 30 inch LCDs are sure as hell gunna be happy knowing that they can knock through FEAR at 2560x1600...and frankly as a gamer, Im drooling at the thought of it
Anyone who can look at a new product and say "whats the point of that" is not the target audience. These ultra high end components are aimed at the people who let their wallets do the talking

I never got the 30" LCD thing though. I wouln't go higher than maybe 22" because after that you have to either sit at the other end of the room or start turning your head to see anything. It's like playing a game two feet from a 30" TV. Nobody would ever do that, or at least I hope not!
