Code 43 error

Hi my video card has stopped functioning. In device manager I am getting a Code 43 for my video card. The card is an EVGA GeForce 8500 GT and I'm running Windows Vista 32bit.

I found the following on Microsoft's website

"One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.

I already have tried reinstalling the drivers, made no difference. Also, I had the latest drivers when the problem occurred. I have also tried reverting to an older driver, no change.

When the problem occurred I was playing a game, then suddenly the graphics on the screen became all deformed and then the monitor stopped receiving any signal from the CPU (it went blank). At first I thought it was a problem with my monitor but when I restarted my computer and had a look in device manager I found error code 43 beside my Video Card

Could it be a problem with my OS not allowing the card to function properly?

When I restart my machine the video card is still being used except the graphics look like they would in safe mode. I mean I'm not using the motherboards graphic adapter since my monitor is still connected to the video cards port. So the video card still seems to be functioning.

I don't get any beeping noises either.

Also I’ve opened up my machine taken out the card, cleaned the pci express port and put the card back to see if the dust in the port might be causing the problem. On restart windows detected the card properly but it still game me a code 43 error.

Basically I'm wondering where the problem is and how I can fix it? Is it the card itself? The driver? The OS?

My first thought went straight to an overheat. How's your cooling situation? Also, when the box crashes like that, feel up the VGA heatsink. I'm willing to bet it's either ice cold or boiling hot.

Hi, Pyro. Thanks for replying

I don't have anything extra for cooling equipment installed so I dunno it might be a cooling problem.

But I wasn't playing a very graphics intensive high end game. I was playing World of Warcraft and that is not as graphics intensive as some the 1st person shooters etc.

But the problem is that I can't even get the card to function properly again so that I could test to see if it is a cooling problem or not.

It hasn't crashed again like that since the graphics aren't functioning properly anymore as the card has been disabled by windows

Does the card work during POST? Or does it not come on at all?

The POST screen shows up correctly. It is the same as it was before the card stopped working.

How can I tell if the card comes on during POST?

When you turn it on, does anything come up on the screen? Then you're good.

But when it gets to windows, it stops using the video card altogether?

Hrm, it appears as if it does. Have you tried reinstalling the driver?

Yes, when I turn on the computer everything comes up normally. I see stuff on the screen and then I get to the log in screen.

Now everything on the screen is like it would be without the drivers.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers and reverting to old drivers. Nothing has worked

From a google search, I'm going to go with all 3.

You said you tried reinstalling drivers, but how about you go and try to install the XP drivers instead? See how that works out.

But I don't understand why XP drivers would work and vista ones won't suddenly. I've been using vista drivers for over a year now to run this card without any problems so I don't see how suddenly there is a problem with the vista drivers.

I didn't recently update my drivers. I've been running the same ones for a while now so a driver change is not an issue.

No, I haven't found a solution. I'm just in the process of buying a new card.

Unhappy

I have the same exact problem you have described. Has anyone come up with a solution or remedy to this problem? I have been using Vista for awhile now and have never had any problems until this evening. I was also Playing World Of Warcraft. when my screen froze and that was it. I had seen a few blue screens over the last few days. I havent over clocked anything. I am hoping someone may be able to work this out with me? Especially seeing as I need to start my college courses in several hours

thank you in advance.
