well according too what is listed on the ASUS website, the Asus A8V-VM SE should be compatible. It has the pci express x16 graphics slot the 8800 GT requires, and I cant see any documents that would say it is incompatible.
What are your concerns about this combo, where you told it is incompatible or were you having trouble when you tried using it?
I suppose there could be an issue using the K8M890 chipset as it is not pci express 1.1 or 2.0 compliant, and there have been cases where older chipsets (even nvidia chipsets) where 2.0 compliant cards are not backwards compatible.
If this is the case, then you are pretty much out of luck as there are no pci express 2.0 compliant socket 939 motherboards. If you were to use something like a Nforce4 SLI chipset then you may have some better luck but there are no promises.
If you are looking for a PCI Express 2.0 compliant motherboard, you will need to upgrade to a newer socket processor. Socket AM2 or LGA 775 both offer boards that will work fine, but you will need a new processor and new memory (as newer boards utilize DDR2 memory, your current DDR memory is not going to work)
So if you can explain a bit more about whats going on, maybe we can be of more help.
