7200GS vs 7600GT

I recently let a friend talk me into upgrading my system (he had another friend who wanted to sell their parts).

Now I had a 7200GS video card and everything looked great and ran great. My friend put in a 7600GT and now video is a heavily pixelated mess and I get screen glitches (I run 2 screens and one will black out for a few seconds occasionally or the screen will glitch/split momentarily.

Now the motherboard and processor were also upgraded.

A few questions:

1) Is the 7600GT a better video card? (according to Wikipedia it was released in 2006 wheras the 7200 was released in 2007).

2) If it is a better video card, then can anyone make a suggestion on what might be going wrong?

THANKS

The 7600GT can handle 1920x1200 resolution can't it?

Is it a better card than the 7200GS?

yes it can but the point is that for the money you can get a way faster card. plus it sounds like the 7600gt youve got is damaged

You can see how the 7200 GS stacks up against the 7600 GT here, and though you may not understand all the raw figures, its easy to see that there is a significant difference between the two cards. The 7200 GS was released as a low end graphics card, though it can game its generally not designed for more being able to play the Sims on the home office PC. The 7600 GT was released as a midrange graphics card, its what gamers were expected to buy. Even though the 7900 series did offer more performance, the 7600 GT was in the price range people liked and it has been a very popular card. Generally speaking you should be seeing at least twice the frame rates as the 7200 GS in most graphically intensive games, and games that were running ok will now be able to play smoothly at higher resolutions or higher detail settings. It is a good upgrade but SWK is right in pointing out that $50 on newegg today will get you something more powerful.

But to help trouble shoot the issues you are having we need a bit more information. What are the complete system specs (board, chip, memory, power supply, case, model number of video card) as that will allow us to figure out your set up and determine if there are any known compatibility issues or anything of that nature.

But if this is a PC you just built from the ground up, reinstalled windows, installed all your drivers, then its likely that the video card is busted. You mention that you are running 2 monitors, have you tried running with just 1 plugged in on the basic configuration to see if the problems continue? If the problems go away with only 1 monitor set up, it could be an issue with the drivers and the way you had the dual monitors set up.

But what else can you tell us? When you play games does it run fine or do you get a lot of pixelated mess? Do you only have the troubles that you mention while you are in windows? Does it matter what you are doing? Have you tried any other multiple monitor software such as Ultramon to see if you can configure programs the way you need them to be.

The Geforce 7600 is much better than the 7200gs. I found myself being in the same boat, but got a 8600gt and love it to death.

When looking at NVidia cards, look to the second number from the left. Thats where the quality and resolution kicks in. So for an easy term:
Geforce 7(2)00GS= 2 is the quality and rating
Geforce 7(6)00GT= 6 being a higher quality
notice that the higher the second number, the higher the bit processor and cost as well.

The first number represents their production line. Dont know about the last 2 or the GS, GT thing. Hope it helps.

Also, visit Invidia's website to update your driver, it does help the performance of your card.

The card itself. I have a 7600gt myself and its running on a 650wPSU, apparently a 650W was better for running a 7600gt than the rated. It might be wise to make sure you have a beefy PSU. Are you running an AGP system? If so ATI released a much better than a 7600GT Radeon 3850 AGP. Tho it's probably hard to find now, ebay probably have a couple.

it's Invidia now? I always thought it was Nvidia, since on the driver installation screen it comes up with this exactly -no typos-:nVidia. so nVidia's name got changed?

for ppl who dont understand wat im saying, it's NVIDIA!!!
