i apologuise. you are quite correct, it's activation, not registration.
but still, i can just change the wording and go: "yes. but the point is that supposedly we're not allowed to use windowz if we fail the activation in the first place.
all this does is re-activate us (or checks our product key is valid, which is basically all the activation does) every so often.
yes, we license the software. but that doesn't give them any right to put in a bot that connects openly to the Internet every now and then, JUST in case our version of windowz is any less valid than the time we downloaded the update [note that you can not actually download the security updates that WGA comes with UNLESS you have activated already]."

This is private information and I don't want MS to know my hardware or how often I change my hardware without my explicit permition. Is that fair enough?

Sure, that's fari enough. You suggest a better way to protect there intellectual property. I bet they'd love to hear it. In fact, they'd probably compensate you nicely for it.

Why would I worry about their problems with protection of their intellectual property? That is their problem which I would like them not to solve it by violating my privacy and my rights. What is next? They will have right to search our apartments in search of illegal software? That is sick. And nother thing, why they need to know my hardware to check if I have illegal software?
