Check Ars Technica, they have some thoughts on it as well as a collection of thoughts from some other analysts.

I read that Microsoft is not losing anything as they will make up their loses they make in the Q4 with Vista sales in Q1, 07. But PC manufacturers are going to be the losers because they were banking on Vista to boost up their sales during holiday season.

Big deal?
If they launched on time it was going to have more bugs than WinXP when it first launched - (it still will), AND it would have been missing tons of promised features. At least now they can finish making it before they release. The way I see it, PC manufacturers have one choice: change their usual strategies. Most mfg's boost prices for Christmas season, and then lower the prices to get stragglers to buy "deals". This year they should do it backwards. Lower the prices in November, and attract as many sales as possible, and then afterwards, jack em up - they know that anyone that is going to want Vista is going to buy it pre-installed because its mucho cheaper that way, and then the CD comes for 10$ and you have a license. Boost sales on PCs after the holiday season, and anyone that has really been waiting for Vista will buy the new computers anyway. Lower the costs before Christmas so that no one passes up the great deals. It's the only way they are going to recover lost sales. To be honest, I bet Dell has something up their sleeves with the Alienware acquisition to stop this from having much of an effect on them. |

Why can't they just say the'll release it a year after they think they will and surprise everybody by only being 6 months off next time? Imagine doing things like that it school. You'd be in detention all the time. WTF happens between high school and working in a major corporation?
