Seagate Purchase Maxtor

I was just having a read about a Maxtor 300gb SATA drive for £66.97 (inc. VAT) when i came across this.

I think i may start buying some Maxtors in the near future

I still won't be buying any maxtors for a while. I am sticking with directly Seagate, Hitachi, or Western Digital.

Yeah possibly. I only posted because i didn't see it in any of the other sections. I think after 2006 it will be 'okay' to buy Maxtors.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO maxtor owns all!. mine owns the seagates with 16mb cache. and i havent had any problems with maxtor so far and 4rigs out of 5 have maxtor drive (the oldest one has 5years).well if the products stay the same it'll be ok.

Yeah, Maxtor does have some pretty nice stuff out there right now. I know that older Maxtor drives used to be insanely cheap and had really poor quality control, but I have had no hickups from any Maxtor drives in the past. Seagate announced its acquisition of Maxtor about 3 or 4 months ago I think, so it's not exactly new news. I just hope that Maxtor can continue producing drives and selling them and consistently inexpensive price points as they've been doing now.

If they can manage to add perpendicular storage to the DiamondMax series, then it will be smokin'!!

i've only delt with maxtor in the past, I have 3 perfect maxtor drives in my computer right now

I'll keep my Western Digital thank you, I've had bad experiences with both Maxtor and Segate, WD has never steered me wrong.

and I will keep my segate and hitachi drives. I had a bad expereince with a maxtor 30gig drive as a slave drive it would go way and I had to restart the computer just to get it back. I hoping that segate can do something about this.

well i don't think maxtor makes hard drives as small as 30gb anymore....

I think a lot of people will just dismay a drive manufacturer if they have had a bad experience with them in the past. That's probably why we see so many contrasting opinions.

Yeah, I was about to say that. It is always inveitable that we argue against one particular brand or for another. It is quite funny how easy it is for one dead drive to sway somebody's opinion. Of course, you can't blame anybody for that, but the fact of the matter is that no matter what brand drive you buy, you are not safe. All drives die, and being mechanical makes them that much worse off. I've never had any problems with WD drives or Maxtor drives, and I've never owned a Seagate before. Does that mean that I shouldn't buy a Seagate drive because the others are running perfectly fine? Probably not, since Seagate drives are just as likely to keep on running or failing as Maxtor or WD drives are. Basically, all of the big three manufactuers don't leave you safe. If anything, the impression of a "quality hard drive" is a false one, since all have such relatively limited lives.

Well i think people are swayed so quickly because when they loose a huge amount of valuable data, it completely frustrates them to the point where they will never take another risk with the same manufacturer. I will say that i am guilty of that but have ensured that i now always keep a backup of any important data on another two or more drives!

Guys..it is simply impossible to make an unbreakable drive if you think about it. Fans and HDs and optical drives are the only components with moving parts in them. Usual mechanical rotors etc get regular greasing and maintenance. Which is not feasible or usually done in computer parts.

Any mechanical rotor at that speed is going to fail at one or another point. Often people argue why HDs should fail while most of the other components in computer live much much longer. Well the reason is simple...
