I second.
I have a huge amount of respect for many politicians, past and present. It's impressive the way our government was designed to mold itself over time. Ingenius really. However, it's the bipartisan and bureacratic B.S. that gets in the way. Proper debate is healthy and necessary, however, the childish pissing contests have to stop. I watched the State of the Union Address the other night. While I was pleased with a lot of what the President had to say, I was further sickened to realize that the majority of it was simply a show. The State of the Union address is required by the Constitution. Every January, the President must stand before a joint session of Congress and deliver the State of the Union. By design, this speech was to bring the two houses of Congress together on where the country stands and what unresolved issues there were from the year before. This way both houses knew what course to take in the year to come. Somewhere along the way, the idea has gotten distorted. Now the State of the Union has become nothing more than a platform for the President to preach from. The closest that the President came to fulfilling his duty was stating "The country is strong." Well now, George, that pretty much sums it up doesn't it? Exactly what the hell does that mean anyway? We know we're strong. Look at what we've been through. We've overcome a fight for our own independence against the strongest country in the world at that time, our own civil war, the settling of the west, slavery, the Depression, two World Wars, various other engagements, and the list goes on. All the while, we've managed to become a nuclear powerhouse, the leading industrial nation in the world, the strongest military (and all volunteer), the strongest economy (believe it or not), a birthing ground for inventors, thinkers, and artists, and a safehaven for the world's rejected, lost, tired, poor, sick, and hopeful. Umm, thanks for clarifying that, Mr. President. So I guess we're strong. Politics has become nothing more than a cross between tug of war and Simon Says. Perhaps we should take the President, Speaker of the House, and Vice President into the restroom with a ruler and solve this *#@% measuring contest once and for all so that they can all get back to governing this great nation.

I agree. I also think the president has too much power. Think about it, with this 2 party system, when 1 party gets into office, they totally try to rearrange the government the way they want. Ex. Bush (republican) is in office now, and as a he is doing everything the republican party supports, passing their bills, appointing more conservative members to the supreme court, etc. Now, I'm not saying republicans only do this. When Clinton was in office there was the same problem. It's just so stupid... |

you could argue that the weakness of the current system is exploited when both houses of Congress and the Executive are of the same party.
i'm not so sure that the President has too much power, its just that everything he wants passed, results in party-line decision votes in the Congress. the Democrats are really on the sideline. when every Republican will vote alike on what the President wants, the other party can only stand there and whine about it. but then, its our fault that Washington is run by one party. we can change that this year. its my personal opinion, that no matter what political party it is, having like-minded judicial, executive and legislative branches is extremely dangerous. |

Technically we do have a multi-party system. Any random Joe can register a political party, and there are a number of them out there. Unfortunately, they don't get the support that the Democrats and Republicans do. |
