I think google's linux, codenamed gubuntu, if made a little more user friendly, could really be what it takes to get linux into the market for the average Joe.

I don't understand how they would know some of these things and it's kinda scary to find out. For example, ear the google firefox toolbar. It requires the person to have never used firefox before for the referer to get the credit. Does that mean the google toolbar will do something like look at your system registry as to when you installed firefox and if it's ever beed there before, and then report that to google? what else could it be reporting to google? This is really making me strongly dislike google now.

As if it was not enough, Google locks horns with Microsoft. They have taken over a company that developes Office suites. Soon expect Google Spreadsheets !!

couldn't google just adapt a version of OpenOffice?
after all all of their stuff so far is free and they aren't as stingy with Open Source as M$. it could be a good way to promote OpenOffice use too. |

I think they believe in brand-building. Hence, purchasing unknown small companies and branding their product as Google. This way they launch relatively 'new' product in the market. Isn't that what Microsoft itself is doing a lot lately!

Here's some interesting analysis of Google SpreadSheet and their other office things. This is something I hadn't thought about or seen elsewhere...

The last thing we would want is MS taking over openoffice, then bringing it down the wrong road, they buy it out for example, then charge a fee for it. I don't trust google enough...
