there's also astaro security gateway. it comes in a software version as well. while it's mainly a commercial product, you can use it for free for home use (up to 10 nodes). at my last job, we used their hardware appliance at one location and they worked very well.

If you actually do the digging and the leak tests, you will find that Comodo is the best software firewall, not by my opinion but actual real world testing.
Of course there is no replacement for a hardware based firewall but better to use both to be safe... especially on a laptop that travels. 96% Old but excellent tester: http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm http://www.jkwebtalks.com/2009/03/firewall-leak-test-suite-from-comodo.html I am not trying to change any minds by my opinion or comments, I am trying to get people to learn to research it themselves and find that Comodo is the chosen program in the IT community due to its near perfect protection. If so, then try telling people that researching your software of choice might be to their benefit, rather than making categorical statements with no substantiation. |

I bounce between Comodo and what used to be Kerio, now Sunbelt Personal Firewall.
Comodo seems to be better overall, but the UI isn't great and it hiccups from time to time, for example when I stream music across the network it will cause gaps in playback. Sunbelt is my old standby from the Kerio days, I appreciate it's UI and it's advanced packet filter capabilities... downsides are that it is no longer developed or maintained by Kerio, that new versions cause my computer to BSOD on reboot, and likes to tell me every 30 days that the trial version is expired and it's reverting to the free version. That, and I sit behind a hardware firewall - dinky router but it gets the job done, for the most part. |
