What makes one WiFi card more effective than another?

Stayed in a hotel this week and brought my desktop. Used my wireless Linksys wireless G PCI adapter. The most I could ever get was 2 bars and it was inconsistent. The manager of the hotel came into my room using his laptop and got a full 5 bars no matter where he put his laptop. Ok how come? Is my Linksys card old? I need a newer one? Seems from reviews of WiFi cards some folks have trouble with some .. some with another? What does a person have to do? Try one card after another or ?

Thanks for any advice.

DT

Most of it is the antenna, followed by the hardware used to receive and amplify the signal.

If you are going to use a PC-Card, then get one with an external antenna for best reception.

For a mini-PCI card, try routing your internal antennas differently, or hack an external antenna into it.
