Unplug power cord and get "Limited or no connectivity" message

Hi everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop (S300-EZ1511) with Windows XP. I have establised a wireless connection to my router and can browse the Internet. However, when I unplug the power cord from the laptop, I get the message "Limited or no connectivity". When I open IE, I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". When I try to "repair" the wireless connection, it gets to the point of renewing the IP Address and then fails. I have to plug the power cord back in and then select repair again. Everything is fine from there. I had a friend suggest I check the Power Options under Control Panel. I did that and changed "Turn off Monitor, Turn off hard disks and System standby" to "Never". That didn't solve my problem.

I have a Linksys wireless router (WRT54G) with WPA Pre-Shared Key security selection. On my laptop, I get the following when I do "ipconfig /all".

Wireless description: Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network adapter
Dhcp Enabled: yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled: yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address: (is set with an ip address that I did not enter myself. not sure where it came from)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: Same as Autoconfiguration IP Address.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Liz

Update:

I plugged the power cord back in and selected repair. I did the "ipconfig /all" again and here are the results.

Dhcp Enabled: yes
Autoconfiguration enabled: yes
IP Address: <ip address is set>
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: <default gateway is set>
DHCP Server: <DHCP Server is set>
DNS Servers: <DNS Server is set>

I didn't list the ip address etc... info because I'm not sure if that's okay to do or not. Not sure if it's a security issue to list that information. I just wanted to tell everyone what pieces of information did come up and whether or not IP's existed for the various settings.

Please let me know what other info. is needed.

Thanks!

Check the power options. They maybe set to turn off the wireless adapter to save power.

I went to Control panel | Power Options. I didn't see anything that referenced the power option for the wireless adapter. Where else do I look?

Thanks!

You are looking in the wrong place.
* Open Device Manager
* Select the wireless adapter
* Double-click to show Properties
* The last tab should be Power Management
* There should be a check box to determine whether Windows is allowed to turn it off to save power

Thanks for the posts.

I went to Device Manager | selected Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter | selected Properties. I did not have a Power management tab. However I did go to the Advanced tab. There was a property called "Power Save Mode". I set it to Off.

Under by wireless adapter, there was an adapter called "Intel(R) 82567V Gigabit Network Connection". I chose the properties for this one. I did see a tab called Power Management. I unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off
this device to save power". The other two options (see below) are stilled checked, but grayed out.

"Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"
"Only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby"

After I did all this, I unpluged the power cord and opened IE. I could not browse. I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I decided to selected the "Diagnose the problem..." link. It couldn't fully diagnose because I manage my wireless connection via Atheros' client utility instead of through windows. The rang a little bell in my head. Anyway, I opened the Atheros Client Utility and selected my wireless profile. From there, I found the Power Save Mode and selected Off. All is well now! Yeah!!

Thanks to you all for your help!

Liz
