Still having problems with networking
saw the post "Guide to Networking XP Pro and XP Home"
im connecting my vista to my XP. did all the steps for both OS 3times and still no luck still cant share files. XP tells me to log in as admin so i went into microsoft, couldn't find the systems configuration. dont know watz goin on with vista. any advice??? Now, click on the Permissions button. If you want to keep things simple, you can just give Everyone Full Control of the folder. Or, if you want to be more secure, you can give individual users different permissions. In my example, I will give Everyone read-only permissions. To add a user, click the Add button. When the Select Users or Groups window opens, type in the name of the user or group you want to give specific access to. I will be using a test user called User1. After you type in the username, click Check Names just to verify you typed the correct username. When finished, click OK. this part is confusing and doesn't work |

On Vista, do the following to easily share files and/or folders:
If all this is done and you still cannot access your network shares, I suggest that you try accessing the other computer by opening My Computer, typing \\PCname (where PCname refers to the name of the PC you are trying to access files from) and seeing if you can access the system in this manner. If that still does not work, you may try to access it directly by IP address. To find the IP address of the host computer, open a command prompt (Start | Run | cmd | Enter) and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. Under the name of your primary network adapter, you should find a field called "IP Address". Go to the client computer and type \\192.168.xxx.xxx (where that refers to your IP address). If all else has failed, this should almost always work. If you needed to make it that far, it is likely that your computers are not on the same workgroup, which can be set in the System Properties, which can be accessed by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting properties. Under the "Computer Name" tab, you should find the option to change the name of the computer and the workgroup it belongs to. Changes made here will require a reboot. Hopefully you get your network running properly, it can often be quite tricky! Best of luck! |

new problem
Finally!!! i got my partitioning done so now im working with 2 XP's (one is a media center edition and the other is a home edition) I thought it would be easier to network with 2 XP's but im stuck again (no suprise). System tells me to get premission from admin (both systems same error message). So i go into safe mode and try everything again and im stuck with nothing in "my network places".
anything??? ![]() |

some clarification
well, have 2 systems, one of my systems has a vista home and xp home partition and the second is just running one OS (XP media center edition).
now i am trying to network the Xp on both systems. when i get everything done and go into "network connections" click "my network places", thats when i get the error message. i am not signed in as admin and that i should consult admin. (not exactly in those words) so i go into safe mode with networking and thats when i get stuck. i hope that clarifies a few things. anything now? |
