Question Setting up a new web server

I am looking to setup a new web server (not in my home using port forwarding) in my office where I have to host a mission critical php/mysql application. I have to publish a URL for the customers over internet to login. At a peak time, a minimum of 50 to 100 concurrent connections are possible. I have a 2MB full duplex leased line with a static IP from service provider.

Is there any one who can provide a guide or a detailed summary or any input on setting up a new server starting from hardware to the final implementation of the web server. I know security is a big concern and I have a good budget to buy firewalls and IPS module.

I am open to suggestion of what OS and server should be used but I need to understand the configuration of the same along with firewall and other setup.

Any help is appreciated.

Well, it's hard to say what you would really need. If you're asking how to do this, and it's for a "mission critical" business application, then you should probably let a professional set it up instead.

The hardware you will need is minimal--4-6 GB RAM, 120 GB hdd, quad-core Xeon. Just about any low-end Dell would suffice.

As far as firewalls go, any hardware-based firewall would work. I wouldn't buy a Cisco or anything--a Sonicwall would suffice.

As far as the OS, it depends on the application you're hosting. Either Windows or Linux could be the better option. If you're not familiar with Linux, then you may need to go the Windows route. I would suggest Linux mainly because it is free and fairly secure.

Again, if you have to go on the Internet to find out how to setup a very important system, you may not be fit for the job.

I have to agree that perhaps if the server really needs to be setup for "super sensitive" data, you may need to defer to a professional.

Regardless, if you're feeling adventurous, I would look into Linux based servers. I personally love Debian and Ubuntu. Have you ever heard of LAMP? It's an acronym for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

Here's a link to a tutorial:
http://beginlinux.com/blog/2009/11/lamp-server-with-ubuntu-9-10/

It's slightly outdated but it still covers the basic steps and is fairly helpful in understanding the general process.
