Computer has been working fine: WinXP Pro on a Netware 6 network using DHCP. Don't know of any changes made that would cause a problem, but all of a sudden TCP/IP isn't working - IPCONFIG shows an IP address of 169.254.198.98, which I understand means it couldn't get a DHCP address. So I installed a static IP address. Thereafter, I could ping the local network but DNS still didn't work, even tho I was pointing to a known good DNS. Tried installing a different NIC - no change. Also tried doing a system restore back to the day before the problem first appeared - no change.Further clues:1) ZoneAlarm 3.x was installed on this machine. Disabling and completely uninstalling it has made no difference.2) From a command line, IPCONFIG /RENEW gives the error msg: "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."3) I installed Microsoft's WNTIPCfg.exe from the Resource Kit (GUI version of XP's native IPCONFIG). Pressing the Renew button from there yields: "Error 10038: Renewing adapter {long number here}."4) With a static IP address configured, running the above WNTIPCFG shows no DNS address, even tho primary and secondary DNS addresses were assigned.5) From a command line, issuing a ping command (to a local network address) shows: "Pinging * with 32 bytes of data
estination host unreachable(repeated 4 times)Ping statistics for *:etc etc"In the above msg, in place of the * it shows a different non-alphanumeric character (a triangle); whereas on a properly working machine, it shows in those locations the IP address it was pinging. So that makes it look like something is wrong--but I knew that already....6) My (Netware) DHCP server shows an IP address having been assigned to that machine yesterday morning, right around or before the time that the problem was first observed (inability to surf the Web). Thanks for any ideas or help! - Natoraf |

Tcp
You have a corrupt TCP stack. You need to run this fix:
http://www.hometownohio.com/faq/files/WinsockXPFix.exe Let me know if that doesn't work....but I'm almost sure it will. |

After I had carried out all the above, reloaded XP and done all the fault finding my brain could cope with it was a piece of software called Sygate personal firewall.
I had ticked the "do not load on startup" option as I now have a firewall in my router and true it did not appear in the system tray but it had loaded up in the background blocking absolutely everything. Uninstalled it from my computer and it started working Cheers |

I had the same problem. I use my wireless connection to surf the web, since the cat5 jack in my room is broken. Lately, windows has been notifying me that I have Limited or No Connection at all. When I choose the option to REPAIR the wireless connection, it says that its UNABLE to renew the IP address. Do any of you think this problem is related to the one posted by the thread starter? I'll try to run the application posted above, and I'll bring news if it works. If anyone has any other alternativves, please post. You're my only hope. Thanks
*edit* I tried the application above and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the help |
