In answer to your questions-
More than a Gas attendant, less than City analyst. But the big money is paid to people with relevant certification e.g. CCIE.
Not telling.
Nope, too many idiots in the business already.
Expect to be laid off every 3 years, our industry is a roller-coaster.

Yeah the CCIE is the way to go if you want good money. I know a CCIE in Dallas that's 21 years old and making about $150k plus bonus. He set up VoIP for DuPont and they fronted him a cool $500k for the long distance POTS savings after 1 year of implementation. Not a bad little income.

You need some MS stuff, obviously. That's the world in which we live. Novell is not as popular as it once was. TCP/IP in a MS Domain world is where it's at. W/ Cisco certs, you can run and maintain hardware in all world. The 'net runs on Cisco products. Don't shy away from any Juniper certs you may come across either. Being diversified will help you immensely. Juniper has some great stuff out right now and is giving Cisco a run for their money. Juniper is to Cisco what AMD is to Intel, except Juniper is not always faster. Just some of their equipment is.
