CCIE is Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert. First, you get your CCNA or CCDA cert (1 test). CCNA is CC Networking Associate, CCDA is CC Design Associate. You can use a router sim for this one. The only thing you need physical equipment for on this is to do a password recovery Then you move up to CCNP (Networking Professional) or CCDP (Design Professional). This step is pretty arduous. It consists of 4 exams on which you must score pretty high to pass and covers about 5-6 books worth of material. For this, you also MUST have the physical hardware at your disposal. They sell "kits" for this on ebay. Finally, you can opt for the big one. The CCIE. The test consists of 2 parts. Written and practical. The written exam is something like 4 hours in length. IF you pass the written, you are QUALIFIED to take the practical. The written test has a 20% first time pass rate, so be prepared to take it at least twice. To take the practical, you go to a Cisco facility. On day 1 they take you into a room full of equipment sitting around and give you a diagram and say build it. You have 8 hours. When you are finished, you go home and rest. While you are resting, Cisco's boys are focking up your hard work. You come in the next day and they take you to the room and hand you a sheet of paper that, basically, says "Fix It". You have a time limit to do this. If you pass all sections, you can claim the title of CCIE. At this point, you are a network god. After that, there are some specialty areas you can go into. You can also specialize at the CCNA/CCDA level as well.

Anyone who gets CCIE has earned it, as there is no cheating or faking it, certainly a boot camp will not even get you close, you either know it (after years of use) or you don't. I don't think there is a harder exam in the Networking field.

MCSE is a tough track. It may even be tougher than the CCNP. The thing that makes the MCSE tough is the dry material from MS. I was 2 tests into the NT MCSE track when they switched gears on me.
With MS, start out w/ just the MCP. That's the desktop OS and the server OS. Then go from there. There is some much MS stuff out there, it's really difficult to choose. You can do the MS Office certs, Exchange certs, security, MCSE, MC Network Admin, etc. The list goes on. The A+ should get you a good head start on the MS exams. Just be sure to know your stuff. Start at the beginning w/ A+ and go from there. It's the basic of the basic. |
