Hello all, just when I thought my M/B sucked, I see all of this. I have been lucky so far my USB's are fine. I have a different problem, It started about 3 months ago. When I power up it takes about 10-20 seconds to show signs of life "unlike it was when new". I purchased this board 1 year and 8 days ago. Specs are: MB MSI|865PE Neo2-PFS MS6728-110, CPU P4/2.8EGHz 800M 478P/1MB HT RT. IM getting sick of waiting for it to boot so i decided to browse the forums for problems, so here I am. Has anyone else had this problem, am i being too picky???? I guess i should be happy it still works from the sounds of it. But anyway, if you have any suggestions Ill be reading the post's here. Oh yea another thing I noticed is in the bios/ CPU buss settings, I cant set the CPUs buss over 200, or the computer wont boot at all. I may be wrong, but when I set this up a year ago I thought I set it to 400. Any help would be appreciated.

My appologies for spamming this thread with my lack of knowledge but heres where i am stuck.
Where do i get to safe mode.
If i go to the start menu i only get the option to log off or turn off the computer and there is no safe mode.
Also i don't have the usb2 drivers which i think now is where the problem rises.
The motherboard c.d does not come with xp usb2 drivers and that it sais that xp comes with the drivers but they don't seem to work or they are not there.
Now i don't know if this is right or not but just reading another thread on another forum and i read that usb2 drivers are not in xp pro v2002 and that you need sp1 to upgrade.Could this be right and if so then there lies my problem.
The usb ports are working fine now but they will not run at the usb2 rate and as i need to run a usb2 device for my video camera input for video editing.
Thanks again
Nicka
When you turn the computer on, right after it finishes the memory check, you want to hit the F8 button a few times. This will bring you to the Windows boot options menu and you can go to safe mode from there.

Enable BSOD: Control Panel/Systems, Advanced Tab, hit the Settings button under Startup and Recovery, and under the System Failure area, uncheck the Automatically Restart checkbox.

Patriot, when's the alst time you reinstalled Windows? Defragged? How many programs are in your system tray, and what AV are you using? There are a great many factors involved in loading up Windows, even the number of fonts installed on your computer affects boot-up time.

The delay begins right on power up. sometimes i hear the computer beep about 2 seconds after i power it up, then it begins to boot, this is the normal boot up. Other times it takes up to 20 seconds to beep just after power up then begin to boot up. As far as operating systems, this can be on a fresh install or one that has been up for months. I have installed a new drive with nothing on it , and it can take up to 20 sencons to beep then begin to boot. This seems to intermitent, but happens most of the time. I shut this off about 4 times a day when im not using it, i guess thats why ive noticed it.

Well, sir, that doesn't sound very good at all... I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would cause the POST to taks eso long and yet allow the machine to keep going.
My two thoughts are memory problems or a wonky power supply. Try running memtest86 for a few cycles and see how your RAM is holding up. If you have access to a multimeter, I'd suggest monitoring the voltages coming out of your PSU when you start up... see if it's taking its time getting up to full power or something.
Barring those two things... maybe you do have a MoBo problem

Just a thank you to you but i discovered it was a driver problem.
I am running xp pro with no sp and i found that i needed sp1 drivers for the usb2 to operate correctly.
Thank you for all your help
Nick.

BTW, an easy way to tell whether USB failure is hardware or software is:
1. Put a flash memory key in a USB port.
2. Reboot and press F11 when prompted.
3. If the hardware recognizes USB, the flash memory will be on the boot menu. Otherwise, it will not. (Prove it by removing the key and repeating this procedure.)

would clearing CMOS help with the USB problem? I am thinking of formatting first but I want to be completely sure before I do so. my mobo is an ASUS P4P800-SE and the USB ports stopped functioning. I will try those steps before I format. also I need to check the southbridge like you guys suggested. how can I tell if it is destroyed? will there be a burned spot on the mobo? thanks
edit: well, i just tried to clear CMOS but that didnt help
i guess the only thing left to do is to RMA this bad boy

One year later.....
I'm too one of you guys!
I had an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe and it's front USB ports never worked and the Southbridge went up in smoke. Just now I got myself an MSI 865PE Neo2-Platinum mobo installed Win XP Home and it all looked fine until I had to use a memory stick. As soon as I inserted it into the front USB port the computer froze up. I can't believe that MSI is still selling them faulty mobos. For that reason alone I'll never buy an MSI product again nor ASUS
And I advise others not to.

i have a AMD msi board. and you know what? the problem isnt teh board manufacturer, its the intel southbridge chipsets taht burn out. i have the MSI k8n neo2-platinum for AMD S939, nforce 3 controler and im glad its not intel. no problems and ive used all USB ports, and im currently overclocking. kekekeke, intel should stick to making processors, not dividing their abilities to make half working components, half working processors, half working southbridge and half working video adapters.... all this "i want to make everything" isnt going to get them very far. probably going to stain their ancient glorious reputation more than anything and replace it with : we make stuff, but they usually have some sort of fault.
my advice: get a nforce intel board. (make sure it supports the chip you want to use tho, or go AMD.)

my old MSI K7N2-delta has never failed me within the 2-3 yrs of having it ..( younger son has it now )
But today i went to put a control pad in my eldest sons pc the asrock p4vm800 and with all six usb ports that it has on the back not one of them worked ?? plus i noticed the 12 in 1 floppy disk an memory card reader isnt working ?
i updated the bios to the latest on and still no go,, updated drivers aswell .. still no go , but it seems to work ok but a bit slugish at times for a celeron 2.4ghz cpu running at 3ghz, the board seems to have an auto overclocker on it..
any one got any ideas of whats stopped them working or is it asrock careless workmanship ?
