Death of a Motherboard

My ASUS P4S8X-X motherboard stopped booting at all after I tried installing a new CPU in it. The LED light in the middle of it still turns on, but nothing happens when I press the on button. I tried everything I could think of in terms of testing other components, I'm pretty sure it's the motherboard (either that or the CPU). How can I be 100% certain? What could have caused the motherboard to go dead?

Does it work with that original cpu, but not this upgraded one? Unfortunately that board is so old Asus no longer lists its cpu support page, but the overview of that board lists support for 400 and 533 fsb pentium 4 processors only, and assuming that will only apply to northwood chips without a bios update from its original shipping state. If you are trying to use a prescott based 533 chip, or a northwood/prescott chip with an 800 mhz fsb then I would assume that is why it is not working.

What cpu are you trying to use? Do you have any details on the chip to determine if that chip is supported by your board? Have you tried using the original cpu once again?

You say that the PC stopped booting after installing this new CPU? Assuming the board still works with the old CPU and all that you did was install the new one, it's unlikely that the motherboard just stopped working. What's more likely is that the CPU is not surpported by the motherboard or that it is simply a bad processor. However, as Stang has said, more details are certainly needed.

Unless you did something else not mentioned here or damaged the mobo in some way, it's more likely that the problem is with your CPU than your motherboard, assuming it worked just fine before with a different CPU.

It's an ASUS P4S8X-X, I tried the old CPU, the old PSU, and even taking out everything just to turn it on. It still won't turn on at all. A few pins on the CPU were bent before, and I straightened them and it fit into the socket. I bent a pin on the CPU fan's connection on the motherboard and straightened that. The new CPU is a Prescott, but it's listed for 533mhz FSB.

Most motherboards won't boot without functioning memory.

Minimum for MB to startup is normally MB/PSU/CPU/RAM - of course you won't get far into tests without front panel power switch connections to turn it on, KB/Mouse and display controller connected to a display.

If you want help you need to explain as much of what happens (or did happen) as you can.
