You know you can put the dock and stuff wherever you want?

And the file bar at top isn't like the start bar in windows or anything.. you don't start any programs from it or whatnot.

It never hurts to be fluent in multiple operations systems.

oh i know that its not like a start menu, infact i really like the ubuntu "Applications Places System" bar I just think its illogical that the file menu should be there. I also really dislike the dock, i knew you could move it, but I don't want it there at all. Can I remove it? without hacking i mean

Well just using basic settings you can't make it completely disappear, but you can shrink it way down and set it so it hides itself when its not being used. You can also move it to whatever side you want and whatnot. But its not a bad idea to keep it around somewhat since that is your file menu. that is where you programs are easily accessible.

I'm not going to force mac upon you of course, but I do enjoy mine a lot.

BTW what are you going to be doing on this laptop?

As for the file bar... its up there as it is in any programs on windows, when you are just in mac os x and not in a program it hardly ever gets used. Its not at all like a file menu.

I'm gonna be using it mainly to do my uni work on it, so I'll be taking it to lectures and writing my reports on it. I'll also be programming during my final project. I do some art work so I'll be using photoshop (i know its better in mac, but I have it working flawlessly on linux so I'm not fussed about that) I also just like messing with it, the OS that is, in fact its my favourite geeky past time.

I know you don't want to force mac on me, and I appreciate your efforts, I just really enjoy using Ubuntu, I see no reason to change. Just like I can't imagine I could convert you from osx to Ubuntu. I can see that osx is well rounded and some of the features I am quite honestly jealous of, but I just couldn't bring myself to part with Ubuntu as my main OS.

I've used ubuntu, I just like the stuff built in to xp and os x more, so I run a macbook and xp on my desktop.

Why I'm asking what you are going to be using it for, if you just want something small to mess around with something like an eee or a cloudbook would work great for that.

But photoshop would probably struggle a bit on those.

No matter what laptop you buy (unless its a dell *shudders*) You will have to install ubuntu anyway as it will come preloaded with mac osx or windows vista anyway.

Yh I'd never buy a Dell. I know I'd have to install Ubuntu, thats half the fun! I really went off xp once I got into Ubuntu and started understanding Unix a little more. Im not sure the EEE pc would be that great for doing a whole lotta work on, I've heard that their keyboards aren't too strong, which would explain the price. I think they make brilliant 'My first laptops' but I dont think it'd cope with the hammering from my fingers. Also I'd be carrying it around everywhere. I am tempted by the mac simply for its build quality. But I'd want to replace OSX and i know lots of mac fans who would really hate me for removing osx (if possible) I think the Sony's have pretty good build quality while the Toshiba R500 has pretty poor build quality (in comparison) I'll probably end up with a Vaio, but I'm still not sure because of the price. Another thing thats stopping me from going for the Vaio is that all of sony's components are closed source so there is little support in the Linux community. People are making progress with them. I spose we'll just wait and see.

Umm.. ya not even close to 17" across. Its a 13.3" daigonal screen talking about a foot when it comes to width. Which isn't all that big... Going to like a 11 or 12" screen will hardly decrease that.

@davbren - Then don't remove OSX completely

Dual boot for a while, mess around with it. You can always reinstall it later. You're paying for vista and os x either way. You may as well get some use out of them.

haha. i spose I could keep it. I wasn't aware that I could remove it completely anyway i thought it had to be there... The problem is of course I'd feel like I was sacraficing ease of use for something that has a few more things that I probably won't use.

HP did announce an UMPC, just saw it on digg (will get link when i can but its off to bed)

what do you guys really think about UMPC's? is thin in? or is the screen size the real appeal??

Im voting on the price point, i can buy a very nice lappy for less than the price of my xbox

Sorry.. you can't get a really nice laptop (especially not for you want) for less than the price of an xbox.

You can get a great email internet laptop for about that price, but they aren't all that portable either.

I think UMPC have their place, but for someone at college, just get a nice portable, stick it in a nice bag and you won't have any complaints about size or weight.
