Looks like the NEC uPD789801 is the processor for me. It will communicate with the IEBus chip via 3-wire serial and it hosts a USB 2.0 connection for communication with the carputer.
In the process, I found a microprocessor that has both IEBus and USB: Renesas R5S72632P200FP, but I can't find a source of supply on it. Then again, I'm having a little trouble finding a SoS for the first chip. ![]()

I have found a 78K0/FF2 chip for pretty cheap. I should be able to interface this with the IEBus controller and translate to RS232, though now I have to find a serial port add-on board for the Epia.
Or, if I can find a V850E/ME2 chip, I may or may not be able to interface that, but that chip has integrated USB, which would be killer. |

A bit of a hack, but that may be what I'll have to do. I think I will go with Gentoo; it seems to be the popular linux-based platform for carputers. Last edited by Dngrsone : June 5th, 2008 at 07:24 PM. |

For the "Ease of use" factor, I would choose Ubuntu or OpenSuSE, but Gentoo will do the job as well - it is just a "tad" more difficult to work with in my experience. Ubuntu and OpenSuSE, typically, everything "just works." Where as Gentoo, you may have to work at some stuff, such as USB devices or other "strange" hardware required in a carputer...
It all depends on how much effort you're willing to put into an OS after all that laboring hardware work... |

THIS may not be the cheapest, but they are a reliable source. 100% recommend them.

Thanks, Weevil.
Well, most of the labor would be up-front: once I get the install done and build an interface, the actual implementation would be just pushing one of a few icons to get either a media player or possibly a GPS mapping application running. Unless I were to install a wireless connection (not likely in the near future), I wouldn't even have to worry about software updates or anything like that. Later on, I may add features like recording system to track my CAN bus traffic-- fuel usage and such; but that's down the road a bit, as it were. |
