Micron Transport ZX - How to Replace Keyboard

Hello,

I have a Micron Transport ZX that I need to open and replace the keyboard and I am having no success searching for the instructions. I see several other kinds of laptops have been discussed here so I thought that I would try posting here. Thanks for any help you can give.

Keith

well I'm not sure about your specific laptop but I'll go with what i know on IBM laptops. Along the bottom there will be many small screws. You'll need to take them all out, then very carefully remove the top plasic surrounding the keybaord, there may be a few clips holding it down so be gentle. Then you probably have to unscrew a few screws holding the keyboard down, carefully pull it out, unplug the ribbon, replace it with your new one, and seal it all back up.

Solution

You can ignore the comments about the IBM.

I have almost completely disassembled one of these machines trying to figure out that you don't have to disassemble anything to get the blasted keyboard off.

There are small black tabs around the periphery of the key region which will need to be carefully pushed, perhaps with a thin flat-head screwdriver, until they allow the keyboard to be lifted.

These tabs are located near the following keys:

BOTTOM--Ctrl & Alt, Space Bar (near right side), Left Arrow & Down Arrow

You will find tabs on the keyboard itself that set into the laptop:

TOP--F1, F5, F11, Insert

Once you have pushed the bottom tabs out of the way and pried the keyboard up it should lift high enough to unplug its ribbon cable (located about in the center).

There are no screws holding this keyboard in place. You will not need to remove any other part of the laptop in order to remove the keyboard.

Now I've got to put this damned thing back together.

Best of luck.

I just got the keyboard out of an old micron laptop. Transport ZX 1400LW.

There were three black plastic tabs at the bottom (by the space bar) of the keyboard. I just had to push those in and it released the bottom of the keyboard. I tilted it up slid out the tabs at the back of the keyboard, and undid the ribbon cable.

Most laptop manufacturers do not require you to bend or pry anything with a lot of force to remove a keyboard. Start by removing keys around the outside and look for tabs or clips or screws or something.

Once I located the tabs, it just popped right out. I pushed in the first one and the keyboard popped up slightly, so I knew I was on the right path.

Good luck!

Tim
