actually just realized this. Does your d600 have a access panel underneath? If so your cmos batter is the long green looking thing thats plugged into the motherboard |

it is a little access panel under the battery. under that panel there is a long green plastic thin containing 3 round batteries. I have tried unhooking that. Nothing happens except for when i turn it on again. A message is shown for a short period of time. DOnt fully remember it now. BUt something like "bad settings, please run setup". and it then returns to the password request.

hmm well thats normal for it to come up with that settings thing but its weird that the password survived it. I'll go research it some more and post what I can find out. |

I also got an HP Compaq nc4010 with the dell when i bought it, for free. He said it was broken but i fixed it.
At first that computer also had a Power on password. I dissconnected the RTC battery, power cord and the primary battery. I then pressed and held the power button for 45sec. Plugged in the power cord without the RTC and primary battery. And powered it on and power on password is no more. But now another password lock appears. A window named "user identification". It looks like a microsoft windows window. What is this? |

click cancel and it should bring you up to the desktop screen. This is usual for some computers to have this. |

BIOS password on C600
Hi folks
I have had this problem for a while now. My wife had the laptop for years but the keyboard was knackered so I got a new one on ebay and wiped the hd and installed xp. Everything was fine for a couple of days until the boy used it, since then it won't boot but asks for the administrator password. I have hunted through loads of forums and got several options. There is a program called latitude.exe which you download and run. You enter your service tag and it gives you a password but it has not worked for me. I have also been told I need to replace the BIOS chip. I have also been told I can short pins out on the chip but as yet I cannot find which pins or where the chip is without having to pay for the information. I know for sure that disconecting the CMOS batery has no effect as the password is stored on a chip which does not require power from this battery. Obvious I suppose otherwise it'd be real easy to bypass these passwords and they are there for a reason I suppose. Anyhow, if anyone has any luck then let us know so I can start using this laptop again without having to pay someone for the privelage! Cheers all Gareth |
