Not to beat an old dead horse here...
I am currently having an issue with a black screen on my Dell Insperion 6000 Laptop. I never move it, BUT i have watched quite a few dvds lately. When I boot up, I get a completely black screen as if it's not on. Everything else seems to be working... I can here it booting up and whatnot. I have tried plugging in an external monitor. No luck. Are there some kind of settings to route video to an ex. monitor? However, I cannot change it as my screen is black, so are there any "blind" steps of changing settings? Example: Tab tab arrow down 3 enter enter dance naked in the pale moon light. LMAO Or am I just screwed? |

Hey thanks! I'll try the fn thing. I did get an external hooked up but it was behaving like an extension rather than a primary monitor. Gotta love microsloft eh?
Thanks a bunch..I appreciate the help! |

okay, so you do get an image on the screen.
in any case, can you still see colours on your lcd? as in, shine some light on it and look closely at it. if you can still see colours, chances are its just the backlight that is blown. if you cant see anything at all, it might be the connection that cut. (in which case you might have to buy a new laptop) you can look for websites that show you how to change screens on laptops, it might be worth it if your laptop is worth alot. |

Yup yup... I discovered the faintness right after I posted here. I did spend a pretty penny on the laptop about a year ago, so yeah, I think I'll see if I can repair it.
Thank Ggod for flashlights! HA! Thanks again! |

ouch well have some fun I guess. Laptops are always fun to work with. I've taken apart a toshiba, panasonic toughbook and my dell c600 so I've had some experience with them Just make sure to try and find all the screwes as they usually hide them under rubber foots, stickers and on dells that fron plastic piece on the top of the keyboard should come off and there might be screws under there. I know on my c600 it had that under that front peice. Also make sure you have a pair of needle nose pliers just in case you bump out a cord and wear a static strap just a precaution. Another thing label where cables go and make sure you get a wiring diagram from google for your laptop and use that as a reference for where the cables go. Have fun |

Dell black screen
I just came across this post, and I have a similar problem. I do not have to move my laptop, just clicking on a website, and will go black, it does not do it everyday, but sometimes 2 or 3 times in a day. I did hooked it up to an external monitor when the problem appeared and had same results on the monitor.
Could you please or anyone tell me if Dell have figure out what the problem is. Thank you, Pete Quote:

I have had similar problems with my Dell Inspiron 8000 where Video would appear distorted and sometimes not at all. Here's how I fixed my problem:
1. Turn off your laptop, unplug it, and remove all batteries. 2. Close the laptop and flip it over to the bottom. 3. On the bottom you should have two 'trap doors' that are screwed shut: 3a. One should be for memory chips (indicated with a K/M) 3b. One should be for the video card 4. Unscreen the one for the video card and open/remove the 'trap door'. 5. The video card (on mine) was clipped in place by two metal clips on each side. Push them outward and the card should release. 6. Remove the two connections carefully -- then reconnect them making sure they are fully seated in place. 7. Insert the card back in the slot and slide in down until the two clips hold it tight. 8. Tuck the wrapped wiring in front to help keep the card seated in it's slot so it isn't loose. 9. Close the trap door back overtop -- it's good if it's a tight fit -- this will help keep it solid in place. 10. Screw it back down tight (don't strip the screw though) 11. Wala -- all should work like new. =Dan= |

I am having a very similar experience....
I have a 2 1/2 year old Dell Inspiron 8600 and all day today everything was running fine...now suddenly late afternoon if I try to boot up the laptop it gets to the displaying windows screen and then the LCD shuts off...the machine completes the boot sequence and is on...but the LCD is off...if I put it in suspend and then reactivate...the display comes on for a few seconds and then again off..... If I boot in Safe Mode it seems to stay on?? If I connect to an external Monitor it is fine... COuld this be a backlight issue or bad lcd?? Thank you. Keith G |
