Any custom laptops??
Hey, I was watchin a couple of vids on laser etchin today and it made me think, 'is there a company that does custom pc chassis?' or something just a bit different. I can't see anything that goes beyond the generic Asus whitebox chassis. The best I've seen so far for something different is the Voodoo Envy 133.
I'm just generally bored with laptop design at the moment. I was thinking of gettin a macbook and installin ubuntu as I'm not a fan of osx. It seems a bit of a waste tho. I also thought about gettin a second hand powerbook g4 (12.1" model) and installing ubuntu on that (less of a waste) I just haven't seen a laptop that inspires me. I'm going back to uni in september and I want to stand out in the croud. I know many people will turn up with MBAs or MBPs or even just a MB. I was thinking about the Asus U3. Thats abit different but it comes at a premium for something that isn't even *that* great. The Sony SZ looks just as good and has so much more *and* is cheaper. The SZ| is winning the race at the moment, I just worry about how rugged it is. Any thoughts? P.S. I thinkits got to the point where I've put *too* much thought into it. ![]() Last edited by davbren : June 22nd, 2008 at 02:09 PM. |

i think what you need to ask first is what do you want your mb/laptop to look like... your probably better off researching what you want army camo/crapy childrens stickers... in the end you want something that you will be happy with not mass produced stuff for the masses... once you go that down, find the machine you want and find out how to modify it to look the way you want... if its etching you want it may be a bit costly... maybe a custom spray job might be better budget choice.

perhaps, there aren't really any companies out there that are doing proper custom laptops, i.e. a fully custom design, like pimp my laptop (not the actual site) I just want something that is fuly custom. Unique, specific to me.

if thats what you want then may i suggest you work on a stencil that you want on your laptop (especially if you get a mbp) then you can get an engraving tool to engrave the patern into the case. I have seen it done once to a mbp (aluminium casing) and it looked pretty hot, though you may also want to get some cheap metal to practice on lol, dont wanna screw up 1000's of $'s on a machine thats gonna look ugly.
as for plastic casings the same might work but wont look so good after its been scratched, so maybe a spray paint job might be good... im gonna leave it to another member to talk about the best way to affix paint to plastic :P |
