Memory Quantities
Hey all...I'm new here. I am very intersted in the outcome of this discussion. I have an average PC:
Asus A8N Sli Premium, 6800gt and 2 g of pc3200. On http://www.tech-forums.net/index.php?s=Array%5Bsessionhash%5D I spoke a bit about what ram configurations I should use. I had been complaining of "hardware lag" i guess. Question is: is it better to have 2g of 4x 512...which I have, or remove 2 x 512 and only use 1g? Is it worth saving to buy 1g sticks if you want to use 2 g total ram? |

Same when 1 gig becomes standard for cheap pcs I move up to 2 gigs What Im thinking the cause of your problem is that the memory controller on your board doesn't like all the slots filled on dual channel. 2 x1 gig would probably be better but it could also be that you aren't using matched ram (4 of the smae stick) which could also yield slow results.

if you re-read, he states that he LIKES 2 gb vs 1 gb. but yeah, the info in this topic is outdated and 2gb is more enthusiasts as mainstream pcs are seeing 1 gb now mainly to be vista compatible. *edit* scratch that, i just understood to whom the reply was for.

outdated indeed
Having four sticks should be fine though, unless they're different types, but some mobos are fussier than others. My Asus p4p800 se didn't mind I had four sticks, two of one types and two of another, but when I bought a Gigabyte G8U it gave me the blue screen of death over and over, so I bought two sticks, 1 gig each of a better brand, and the difference almost made me want to orgasm |

if youre going to keep the same computer for a long time, 2x 1 gb is better than 4 x 512. why? due to the controller's specs and what not. it IS an amd afterall. 4 sticks might have the mobo throtle back to a slower speed of 2t comand rate, even if its a venice, which is far from ideal. as for teh 2 gb vs 1 gb question, 1 gb if you dont need 2 gb, 2 gb if you need 2 gb. (basically big programs taht eat memory vs not so memory demanding games) |

Outdated Indeed
Indeed it is, however, I just ran across the issue recently. I have 2 sets of 512. Each set is matched, not all 4 are matched. They are all the same model...speed..make. I just removed 2 x 512 due some other advice. They were saying it could slow down the cpu rather than speed it up.
Although it may cost more ...I like Dragon's approach. For now, I'll keep it 1 g...maybe stick the other 1g in and save for new 1 g sticks. Thanks for the replies. ![]() |

Some Mod Please Lock This Thread!
This Thread, In My View,Has Outlived Usefullness. I Believe It Is Safe To Say That 2x1gb > 4x512mb/2x512mb. In Short, It Is Going To Be Better To Have 2 sticks of 1 gb in dual channel. There. I've Said It. |
