More Memory Caused Processor Speed To Reduce

Compaq NC6220 Laptop
1.73 GHz Processor Speed
1 GB of RAM
40 GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Pro

The Properties of "My Computer" listed this originally:

1.73 GHz
1.73 GHz, 1 GB of RAM

A friend of mine wanted more memory in the laptop so I stuck another 1GB of RAM in the laptop. Now, when you open the Properties of My Computer, it says this:

1.73 GHz
364 MHz, 1.99 GB of RAM

I pressed F2 to save the changes that the laptop seen the extra memory. I used 1GB Infineon HP Compaq RAM stick.

I took the extra memory back out and rebooted the laptop with just its original 1 GB of RAM, but the Properties of My Computer still reads 364 MHz instead of 1.73 GHz.

Was there something else I need to do? I’m not sure what to do to get the Properties to read 1.73 GHz instead of 364 MHz. And not sure why it would now read 364 MHz when its a 1.73 GHz processor.

Thanks for any help.

This should just be the power/heat saving features which should have been turned on all along. To verify this you can download software like CPU-Z, which is free and simply reads the values, and run it. While sitting idle it should be running at that reduced speed as and you start doing more intensive things like loading up software, playing games, etc, then that speed should automatically rise up to the 1.73ghz that it is rated for. Many of us use these features because it can save on heat output, power consumption, and noise levels (lower heat output = lower fan speed), and even on a modern desktop this technology is used. My overclocked workstation sits at 1.5ghz when idle and 3.2ghz while I am encoding video for example.

If for some reason you dont these features turned on, and want to run at a constant 1.73 ghz regardless of the load, then we can walk you through the steps within your bios and windows to disable them.

There is no other reason why your chip should be running at such reduced speed. Very few laptops will give you the options you would have to change to underclock your chip by any other means.
