Memory amounts
Hi guys,
I don't know much about how RAM actually works, but I've recently upgraded to 4gb of ram from 2gb (as one of my 2gb sticks broke)
I have 64bit vista, and my 4gb of ram is 2x corsair 6400 800mhz ddr2.
these are running in the paralel ports (my motherboard has 2 black ram slots, and 2 yellow ones, and I have read that it runs fastest if you match colours)
Anyway, I still have one gb of ram which is identical in regards to speed and manufacturer, but is only a one gb chip.
If I install the 1gb chip for a total of 5gb, will I see a performance different? Also, is there a chance it might slow the machine down as it would only be running in one port, with no matching ram in the other?

You might see a performance decrease because you won't be running dual-channel, and an extra 1GB on top of 4 probably wouldn't net you much gain anyway. I'd leave it out; put in some other computer.

Indeed, well said D1.
The question you need to ask yourself is Do you really need more than 4 gigs? Chances are, you don't. And if this is the case then putting that another stick isn't worth it (for once, it can decrease your overall performance and it also becomes an overkill since you won't be using that amount).
But if you really need more than 4 gigs then 5 gigs will help because you won't be swapping that much, more info fits into. And ultimately, regardless of memory types, speed, latencies, or dual channel, RAM is always faster than classic I/O read/writing from the HDD (swapping).

But if he is using Windows, then he has no choice in the matter-- there's going to be swapping going on. How is that extra GB going to affect Wins swapping behaviour?
