Memory?
I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 and I was unaware that there was only 128 KB integrated memory. Plus I have an accessible memory module 256 KB inserted and my laptop runs really slow. I contacted Dell Hardware and Dell spare parts and they informed me that my laptop can only hold 512 KB of memory. What can I do to make my laptop runs faster, other that send it back to Dell for a system upgrade. Also if I were to purchase an external 512 KB memory module will it only read up to 512 KB or because it exceeds my limit will it work? Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Ok well a few things, Do you mean MB instead of KB because if it was KB that would be from a long time ago. And integrated RAM, didn't know there was a thing. If you have a 256MB module in your laptop then you should be able to add another 256MB memory module in with it, giving you 512MB of RAM which should help with performance. As for the external memory if you mean a USB flash drive that is a completely different type of memory. That memory is to store data on like a cd or dvd while RAM is Random Access Memory which is used to temporarily store data of the programs you are running, unlike your hard drive which permanently stores it. So no the external memory won't do anything for your computer speed.

He probably has a 128mb dimm in his laptop and wants to upgrade that. You have two options:
1) Remove the 128mb dimm and replace it for 2x 256 modules which = 512mb
2) Add a 256mb module giving you a total of 384mb
One thing you will need to do is provide us with more information about your processor (Intel, of course) and information about your motherboard so we can suggest which type of RAM you need to buy because not all modules are the same. The reason for this is that all types of RAM have different timings and we want to get the right stick for your system so you don't spend money on something which will be either too much for the system or insufficient (in terms of bus speed).

Ya maybe you are rightm 128MB module in his comp, and he is probably thinking of a usb drive as his 256MB one, that is why he is talking about the 512MB module.
But yes do what jazzy said, you need to open up the bottom of your laptop and replace it with RAM modules, probably 2 256MB modules would be the best.

I Did Mean 128 Mb Integrated Memory, I Only Have One Slot For A Memory Module. I Did Not Mean Usb. My Onboard Memory Is Only 128 Mb And I Need An External Memory Module (chip/stick) To Make My Laptop Runs Faster. Dell Support Said I Only Have Room For 512 Mb Max (internal + External).

You can get external ram sticks. So you will have to buy a internal 512MB pc2700 (your systems ram) and take out the old 128MB stick and replace it with the 512 MB stick.

THE 128 IS INACCESSIBLE, IT IS THE INTEGRATED MEMORY, THE ONLY PART THAT IS ACCESSIBLE TO ME IS THE DOOR UNDER THE KEYBOARD WITH A "M" TAGGED ON IT. THAT DOOR ONLY HAS ONE SLOT FOR A MEMORY STICK.

Then you can't upgrade, if you have 128MB that is unaccesible and a 256MB stick then you can't do anything. And if you mean ram don't say external stick, just say its a 256MB stick of ram, external would mean that it is outside of your case. Don't know why they would make integrated ram, could it be 128MB of ram for you graphics? If that was the case then a 512MB stick would work.
Ok here read this it explains how your ram slots are set up for your comp. Ok so the 128MB is how much it comes with standard but it supports up to 512MB. So if you have 256MB if it is all in one stick then you can simply put in another 256MB stick of ram and be on your way. If it has 2x 128MB sticks of ram then you need 2x256 MB sticks of ram and need to replace the ram you have currently.

Mangun,
Read this all carefully. The intergrated memory module is under the Keyboard and the EMI Shield of the 2650. You can only use two 256 meg memory modules in both memory slots. I don't think the single 512 would work.
Follow the Dell instructions for the removal of these two components in the above manual, the Keyboard and the EMI Shield.
Some practical suggestions that I used when I did this to my 2650.
Shut down the computer, unplug the power cord and remove the battery.
Once you've unscrewed the Keyboard, do not remove it from the computer, just flop it forward keyside down on the palmrest/trackpad. You don't need to disconnect its cable.
With the display-feed flex cable, pull gently up on the tape that secures it to the case and place it on the screen GENTLY!). it may not stick back down well, but don't worry about that.
For the EMI Shield. Be very carefull with the screws. Don't drop them in the case! Once you lift it up and there right under the EMI Shield is the onboard (Factory) memory chip. It removes just like the customer ram on the bottom of the case. Put a second 256 meg chip in its place and you'll have 512megs of ram. Be careful not to touch anything else under the EMI Sheild. The reassemble the case.
I used PC2700 256 meg dimms. I don't understand why they say you'd need to ruturn it to dell for this upgrade. It was really fast it only took about ten minutes.

A single 512 module works too!!! The trick too maximizing your RAM is to get access to the memory stick under the keyboard (which is pretty easy if you follow the steps above). I struggled with the configuation problem until I removed the 128meg module under the keyboard and replaced it with a single 512 module. Now everything is sweet. OBTW if you try to add more memory (beyond 512) in the user memoy slot your comuter will not even boot - so save yourself the trouble.
