How Much Memory?

I’m looking at a new laptop. All the systems I look at have at least 4GB. Some systems have option to have a total of 6, 8, or 12GB. Are there a general rules to how much memory you should have?

Thanks,

I think that having the ability to add RAM is something to consider.
Most important is the type of RAM, ddr2 or ddr3 <-Better and the speed of the RAM it can use.
I would not buy a lappie new that did not have ddr3 and at least 8g unless the price is a breaking point.

I was going to go with 4 ddr3 and add memory later; but when I was building the laptop on Dell's website, I got an upgrade to 6 ddr. I still have the ability to add later if I want

Thanks for taking the time to respond,

It is also important which software you will use and whether it is to obtain a 64-bit version. Because to use over 3GB of RAM TI's Windows 32b prohibitive it.
I hada compatibility problem with 64-bit version of ProEngineer, some programs in 64-bit version or are not developed
