The original Clockwork Orange or the American cut? The Stand was good, until after the plague, then it went to hell.

Continuing on the Heinlein project, four more down since last update and they are not getting any easier to read. All deal with human relationships and social and moral issues as much as science and technology.
Friday, an Artificial Person's journey to find a place to belong. To Sail Beyond the Sunset continues in the same manner as Time Enough for Love (which I really liked, despite being difficult to keep turning the pages). This is Maureen's story. More future history, like reading the same stories again but from a different perspective. Farnham's Freehold broaches the subjects of slavery, cannibalism, nuclear holocaust, and more. A group is blasted into the future by a nuclear war, to be picked up as slaves then blasted back to the past by their masters. Job: A Comedy of Justice just about lost me. Rapture, Armageddon, Ragnarok, Yaweh as misbehaving child among gods. Yaweh taken to court (of yet higher powers) by Lucifer with Odin and Loki as hostile witnesses. This one is beyond Heinlein's usual multiple-timeline/universe escapades as time/space as humans know it no longer has meaning. And now for something completely different: I have ordered a ECTACO JetBook eBook reader. I still have reservations about using an electronic reader, mostly due to reading Project Gutenberg titles at a computer years ago, but expect having a less cumbersome device to be a better experience. Being able to carry a book around and read wherever convenient is part of that experience. A laptop is too much and my phone is not enough, though both are capable. (I also used some of those PG files in the process of learning Morse Code years ago - the simple language and familiar story of (for example) A Princess of Mars was much easier to learn on than random mixed code groups, and easier to get myself to practice if there was a good story as a reward) Ben N1NP

Friday is one of my favorite Heinlein books (and the Michael Whelan cover is another favorite).
I read nearly everything on my Palm T|X now, though finding electronic versions of some books can be a pain (not to mention that apparently no one actually proofreads scans). |

I always thought my Nikon FG did a pretty good job. I am just shooting a lowly Nikon Coolpix 995 for digital. ![]()

Now halfway through part 8 of the Sword of Truth series, Naked Empire.
Part 7 wasn't as good as part 6, and a bit predictable. I haven't formed a decisive opinion on part 8 yet. After this one I'll have to break for a bit, as I don't have the last three books in the series yet. I did just get the 7th and final part of the `Saga of the Seven Suns', by Kevin J. Anderson, So I think I'll finally start reading that one (I read part 1 when it first came out, but then stopped reading until all parts were done).

Time for another update, I don't know how I managed to read these with all else going on but here it is:
Agriculture for Beginners, Burkett, Stevens, and Hill. This is basic farming for the non-farmer. A bit out of date in places, but useful and interesting. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz, L. Frank Baum. I had never read these. Beyond the Vanishing Point, Ray Cummings. Old-school sci-fi. The Gripping Hand, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Entertaining sequel to The Mote in God's Eye, though the ending was abrupt and left me hanging. Currently reading The Early Poems of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, John Churton Collins. Why? ![]() Ben N1NP |
