Not All kit lenses are garbage.. especially depending on what body they are for. Sure you wouldn't see a professional using them, but for the average photographer they are solid lenses.
Also, Canon does make good products and all, but it's not like they come even close to running circles around Nikon. Nikon's are extremely well built camera's as well.

Like someone said above, it's really all about personal preference. Which feels better in your hand, has a layout you like, the GUI you like, if it works with what you already have or not, it's future expandability, etc. That's why all along I've said let him choose. If you want it to be a surprise, maybe make a cool paper or wooden mockup of a dSLR to give him on x-mas with a voucher for the one he wants (to a certain price point). |

Your original posts you slam Nikon, say you would never touch one, you are saying Canon is far superior. I'm saying they are really quite equal. Canon has some nice equipment yes, but they are not hands down the best DSLR manuf, they are one of the best, but they are in no way really much better or worse than Nikon. |

Actually, in my first post, I say they're about equal, but used my brand loyalty as an example for such that might exist in him. In a later post I say that Canon is superior to Nikon, but that again, is really just a matter of opinion. I the rectified that with my 3rd post.
Ok great. Moving on... I like Mrs. Hey suggestion best, check out d-preview. You can compare each brand's entry-level, etc. cameras on there, get a general idea of what you're looking for. |

thanks! i like the fact they can compare features. Not everyone wants a camera for the same thing! It's amazing...when I was looking for my first dslr (had a Kodak & Minolta p & s prior), I went to dpreview & narrowed it down. But after going to the specific formums for each (Canon & Nikon) was how I made my decision final. Not everyone likes the same from a camera...if we did, life would be boring!!!
