TLTE is what brings me onto the forum at all anymore these days, which generally than has me browsing through the rare new thread. If it's closed I honestly would never be around (even though I'm rarely on already).

The TLTE thread is what I come to read, to see what you guys are up to. Closing it would be just dumb, in my opinion! Someone would just start a new one anyway, so leave it open!

I obviously don't want to push anyone away. Especially those who have been here awhile. But don't you guys think that there are too many technical questions being asked there that belong other places? Because that thread is so long, it's unbelievably difficult for moderators to split those conversations out like they should be.

No. That won't do any good. Forums are dead anyway. TLTE doesn't change a thing for the end-user/new member.

I used to be for closing TLTE to promote other areas of the forums, but now...
I dont think keeping it open will impact on new members or people just looking to get a quick answer.
All closing it is going to do is stop some members visiting the forums just for the chat.

I tend to agree with IceDragon.
I do not see how TLTE stops new members from posting questions in the correct places. They still manage even now to post questions in the wrong place.
I do agree we should bump out hardware questions in TLTE to a more appropriate place if one gets posted in there but the thread itself is good to stay in touch with the older members who used to be much more regular visitors in the past.
Not many new users post pertinent questions (if any) in TLTE anyway.

True, but I'm not concerned with the new members. It's the regular returning members who generate most of this site's content.

It's not feasible to split posts out of TLTE. In order to do that, a moderator has to browser EVERY post of the thread to find one specific one to split it out. It's extremely time consuming which is why that isn't being done now.

I beg to differ. There are dozens if not more. I opened this thread immediately in response to just that happening.

Given it is a reference point for old members and in my opinion does not need to be the actual longest thread ever I have an idea .
Can you:
create a new thread (TLTE history);
move all TLTE threads content to that thread;
add a post (in TLTE history) with a link to the original thread;
close it (the new thread);
post a back link in the now empty old thread to the history thread.
That way you can close the long thread trail and keep it's info without losing the original thread - I think
