XP keeps restarting after installation of RAM

I recently tried to upgrade my ram. However when i installed the ram i soon realised it was the incorrect ram , as my computer showed the blue screen of death and then rebooted.

I soon removed the ram but since then my xp has continously rebooted.
I also can't access safe mode.

I then thought that i might have damaged my old previous ram so I ran memtest86 to see if there were any problems. Memtest reported that my was fineram. I also ran windows recovery cd and did a chkdsk /r but still no success. Please any help would be appreciated because im completely baffled to whats causing this problem. Im considering buying a new hard drive so that i can recover the data on the existing hard drive.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

My system is

XP Home SP2
1GB RAM DDR SDRAM
Chipset Intel 915P
Motherboard ASUS P5GD1 PRO
Hard Drive SATA 160gb
Silent 400W Eagle PSU

I've also noticed that my CPU temperature inside the BIOS is around 60*C. Im using an artic-cool cooler which i've had for the last 3years. This seems high for an initial boot and im not sure what the maximum CPU temp is for pentium 4's. I've tried connecting an external fan that drops the temperature to 45*C. But the same issue occurs. Is there a way to confirm that my CPU is overheating or that i've completely fried my processor?

If my processor is fried would i need a new mobo?

Any assistance would be appreciated
Thanks

Pentium 4's generally run quite hot but if you've disturbed it at all while fitting ram it may be worthwhile taking the cooler off cleaning of the old compound, applying some new compound and refitting it. Even if your CPU was toast it wouldn't normally fry your motherboard. As for your ram, try resetting your BIOS and see if that helps. Your timings may have "stuck" for the new ram, unlikely I know but worth a try.

I am going to start with the basics here... was the computer shut down when you installed it? I ask this because you stated it showed the BSOD immediately as if the computer was running... if so then you likely fried the board... if not then you may need to check the voltage for the memory to see if it tried kicking it up for the new RAM thus zapping your old RAM...

Good point, I missed the obvious there!

I've never seen any edition of windows instantly show a BSOD. Normally, it'll either fail boot and restart (ad infinium), freeze up at some point (whatever's on screen will just stay there), or randomly BSOD while the system is on, but always after login.
