As far as I knew, the fastest socket 478 Pentium 4 with a 533 mhz FSB was the 3066 mhz based on the Northwood core. It had only 512k of L2 cache and a 23x mulitplier. The fastest P4 cpus for the 478 socket were the 130nm northwood 3.4 (512k L2) or the 90nm prescott based 3.4e (1mb l2 cache) and the 3.4ghz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (130nm gallatin based, 512k L2, 2mb L3). The fastest Pentium 4 processors were actually based on the LGA 775 socket, and scaled all the way up to 3.8ghz on the Pentium 4 67x series. The 670 and 672 were both 2mb prescott based chips with a 800mhz fsb and the 671 and 673 were 65nm cedar mill based chips, also with 2mb of L2 cache and an 800mhz fsb.

The world record for the Pentium 4 when it comes to overclocking is staggering though...a full 8180 mhz...thats nearly 8.2ghz...and that was achieved with an LGA 775 pentium 4 631

But really, unless you just want to track these chips down for fun, they are effectively useless. The cheapest chips available today will be just as fast if not faster, and odds are you'd be able to build a new system cheaper than you could upgrade your existing computer. But the only place I can see that you can still find Pentium 4 processors for sale, is geeks.com, who sel the 3.06 533fsb for $42...or very nearly the price of the Athlon LE-1660 (single core, 65nm, 45w tdp, 2.8ghz clock speed) or the Athlon X2 5050e (dual core, 65nm, 45w tdp, 2.5ghz clock speed). So clearly faster chips can be had, and would yield much better results than dropping a new p4 into an existing motherboard.

But like I said, if theres a reason you want a new P4, us geeks here understand

haha, hey when I first came to Dev years ago, this was the processor I was running; robbed it from a messed up Dell desktop

I OCed it and had it stable at 3.4ghz for a while, then got SNDS after I got a good cooler and thought I could raise the voltage

ah memories...

I've got a few old 478 proc's lying around somewhere from past systems... I need to dig out all my old stuf... still half boxed-up after the move...

as far as I know, isn't everything around 3.0ghz and higher an 800mhz proc? Or is it maybe just the ones that support HT are 800mhz? I don't know, I can't remember... it's been so long since I've messed with any 478 system

why do you have to stick with 478?
