Q6600 vs E8400

which one would you get?

i rarely upgrade my PC once I buy them. In fact the last time I bought/upgraded a PC was 5 years ago.

I mainly use the PC for gaming, but I need something that will last me a long time.

should I wait a couple months till better quad processors come out?

You won't have to wait a couple months, more like three weeks when the 45nm quads hit the streets. I would definitely wait it out as it would be in your best interest

It won't hurt waiting a few weeks like brian said, but they will probably be very hard to come buy initially.

Out of those two chips, definitely the e8400... The q6600 is just a space heater, and its really not even all that great of a chip.

Psh, whatever man, the q6600 is an excellent chip. It just doesn't compare to the 45nm shite that's coming our way.

Well yes its a fast chip...

But it really wasn't made all that well, they could have done much better, mainly when it comes to efficiency. Yes it beat AMD to quads but its just really wasn't as good as it could have been.

...and i thought it was pointless starting a new thread so i thought id ask here

well i also have the same issue (q6600 vs e8400)

and i've read a lot on the topic and this is where im at:

he needs the computer to last a long time maybe 4-5 years and it will be used 98% for gaming, maybe a tiny bit of rendering (not enough to make an impact on the decision)

the fact that the new 45nm quads are comming has added to the problem because now there are three possible options

1.
e8400 -au$350 gonna run very well till applications start using all 4 cores then it will be left in the dust (most likely)

2.
q6600-au$295 it will be able to run anything availible now without a noticeable difference to the e8400 and it will probably last longer since later all 4 cores will be in use.

3.
wait for the new 45nm quads...this options is what is probably the best but may not be affordable because my friend is on a budget(around the price range of the e8400 maybe a tiny bit more). if anyone knows the prices of upcoming quads this would help a lot

one last thing i thought i should mention is that there isn't going to be any overclocking done so how well each processor can overclock is not a factor...

any suggestions would help

E8400/Xeon 3110 Same chip. Or hold out for 45nm quads. The e8400 is the cheapest option at the moment, should be faster for games than a q6600 and is available now. Overall the 45nm quads will be awesome, but they aren't available yet and I believe they do run slower than a e8400 in a flat out sprint.

If its mainly a gaming rig there really isn't a need for a quad core though. Any of those chips will run just fine though.

are you sure that its better to go duo core since this pc won't be unprgaded for a while, i thought it will be like running a prescott in a duo core world. I'm worried that in a year or too everything will be quad cores and my friend wont be able to the latest games(slowly turning down the graphics as his pc ages) like i promised him.

if i were to wait, does anyone here know the release date for the new processors? the q9300 is already available at a nearby store but its still too expensive at AU$545 compared to the q6600 which is only AU$295
