Can you confirm if you have a raid card installed? If so the drivers are located on the support CD here (URL address blocked: See forum rules)=0&uid=psg1MIGR-61707&loc=en_US

Both on-board and PCI SCSI controler refuse recognising SCSI harddrives.

Thank you CCP,

I would like to say that your replies have been a lot of help so far, I am very grateful for that, and for you having so much knowledge about raid and SCSI, which is quite unique.

But to give an answer to your question, I have a SCSI card installed in my netfinity 5000. It's a PCI card, the card has some more connectors than the PCI slot, as you can see in the picture.

Sorry, I will post a picture later, the battery of my camera is empty . But an ASCII-art would be like this:

.........|--------------------------------|
.........|.......SCSI-CONTROLLER CARD ....|
BACK..|........................................... .|...FRONT
.........|........................................ ....|
.........|........................................ ....|
.........|----||| |||||||||| ||||--------- |
......................................PART that is out of slot
................|-------------|
................|..PCI SLOT....|
.........----------------------------Main board---------------

Where the back is the back of the server, so where the card is seen from the outside of the case, and front is the side where the power button (usually) is. Of course the card is plugged in the slot, and not hanging above it .

So I have a card, and it is connected the right way to the terminator and the SCSI hard drives. At least that's what I think because once Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 98SE was installed on one of the drives, and configuration haven't changed since then.
Another reason why I think that is because the server does recognize it when I remove or rearrange drives. At the next start up it will say: "SCSI Drives have been removed/replaced" (or something like that).

And I do think I have the CD you meant. It is a bootable IBM support CD, and it allowed me too flash my BIOS. The readme files do mention something about drivers, and there a 'Linux driver' (a .tgz file). But is there a way to import the drivers during the start of a Linux installation. My SuSE Linux 10.2 says that the aic7*** drivers are loaded. Is that enough?

The CD readme files tell me to install the drivers when Linux is installed but I can't get it installed without the drivers :S.

NOTE: When I press <CTRL>+<A> at start up I get some kind of SCSI/RAID utility. The utility does detect my SCSI controller on ID 7, but other ID don't contain drives. Is that the on-board controller the utility configures?

Thank you for taking the time to read my story,
Herbert Kruitbosch

ok, if you have a card in a PCI slot that is hooked to drives then you have an add on SCSI/RAID adapter.

The AIC 7*** driver is for the onboard SCSI adapter. Mine is listed as aic7895 when my machie boots. It would be helpful if you could find the type of SCSI/RAID card is in the PCI slot. Here is a listing of the IBM serveRAID cards. It has a lot of info and pictures to help identify your cards. (URL address blocked: See forum rules)

There is a separate CD with drivers and utilities just for the SCSI/RAID card. It would not be the same one that came for the server itself. The card is an add on that has a separate BIOS and drivers. You may be able to find a part number on the card that will hep identify it. Once you do find the PN look up you can try to locate drivers for it.

If you go to ibm.com/support and search on serveraid and linux you will find many useful resources.
Look for:
IBM ServeRAID Support CD v7.00 - Servers
IBM ServeRAID BIOS and Firmware Diskettes for SCSI - Servers

these are the title of a few of the docs that I used. But that will depend on the adapater card you have.

Is it possible that when I disable the on-board controller, that the 'non-board' pci-card starts working. Because of double reserved memory or something? Namely one of my classmates told me so.

Post Enabling Adaptec in BIOS enables booting something from SCSI harddrive.

..//__|I've placed some posts in this threat earlyer|_//
//_________|So this is a story continued|________//..
Dear Reader,

So far I have found something that was disbled in my bios. I Enabled it, and some old operating system started when I rebooted. The thing I enabled was an Adaptec SCSI Controller. I found it somewhere in the Advanced Opions.

Still, I do rember that I enabled this before, but probably deu to powerfailure (I unplug the power supply quite often) it was disabled again.

I haven't installed linux on my server yet, because I'm quite short in time. I have a mixed feeling about it to work. That is because I was able to boot the old OS earlier, and my linux wouldn't get installed. But I will try this weekend, when all my schoolexaminations are fullfilled.

Thank you for reading my text,
Herbert Kruitbosch

Question Netfinity 5000 Fedora install

Hi:

I am trying to install Fedora 6 from the CD ROM on a Dual 400 MHz Netfinity 5000. When I get to the stage of loading the media for the install it says there isn't a CD in the drive.

Of course what's weird is that it BOOTED from the damn CD-ROM in the first place.

I've gone through this before. Its something to do with the CD-ROM not being on the same controller as the RAID.

Any suggestions? It sounds like a similar problem to the one in this thread.

Thanks,
JG

Use a dvd in stead of a cd to avoid 'cd-not-found' error.

Hello JG,

I quite have the same problem when use a cd-drive. I still have the problem, because I'm in mucht time right now. But I do remember that when I used my dvd-player, with a bootable SuSE dvd it didn't gave the error.

Well, it did gave another error. As you can see it is shown above. SuSE cannot mount my filesystem. So my scsi drives aren't loaded correctly. So I would NOT buy a dvd-player if you dont have one, you're not ensured that it will work. But if you have, you could try it. I'll update when I've got the time to go through some documentation and stuff. Good luck!

Yours faithfully,
Herbert Kruitbosch

I've installed FC6 on my two netfinity 5000s. I did have a CD drive issue initially on one as it would not boot from it. I replaced it and worked fine. Did the CD drive work before installing FC6? You could verify by booting with a DOS disk and seeing if you can use the drive.

The CD ROM is on a different controller. It is the onboard IDE controller while your hard drives are on a SCSI controller or SCSI RAID card like serveRAID xx or similar. You cannot hook up hard drives to the IDE controller on a NF5000.

Were you able to get to the media test screen on the FC6 installation before you ran into the problem.? Its hard to say what your issue would be, but if you are networked you could try a network install.

I would certainly try updating and drivers and BIOS if you have not already done so

Thanks everyone:

Actually it worked OK with Redhat 7.1 or something older. Then I upgraded to 7.3 and that's when it went downhill. I used to put the old CD in and then switch back to the new one, something really brain-dead like that.

I think I'll replace the CD-ROM, making sure it has Fedora support.

I did the BIOS upgrade at some point. That didn't solve the problem.

I've been running this machine for 9-10 years, still a good work horse.

Regards,
Jordan

Thank you CCP

This reply does not contain much information

Dear CCP,

I would like to thank you for helping me. I've read some pdf's I found using your keywords. They contain quite useful information about even more I ever imagined existing. My Netfinity problems aren't finished yet, but I will work some more on it, since my school examinations are all finished for some time now.

Well, actually I'm planning to rebuild my computer (see specifications below) in the Netfinity, and give it a awesome SCSI controller.

o AMD Sempron 2600+
o 3GB RAM
o GPU 768MB
o Both 80GB S-ATA/IDE
o And quite hip for installing linux, a dvd-player.

I promised a summary of my Netfinity experience earlier, but since I'm not finished yet, you'll have to wait for that. Sorry.

Yours Faithfully,
Herbert Kruitbosch

Hey all, if anyone is still reading this thread i could use some help. I have a NF500 Dual 500Mhz P3 with a SCSI card (see picture) and i cannot get Windows XP/Server to install. It says i do not have a SCSI bios installed. I have tried Enabling SCSI card precendence through bios but i still get the same error. Also i cannot boot to my Server 2003 install disc (have tested it on other machines and it works fine). Does anyone know a way around this?? I have 4x 9.1Gb SCSI drives installed.

I have added photos of the SCSI and Harddrive,if thats any help..

(URL address blocked: See forum rules)=view&current=Scan07-04-161629.jpg

If that doesnt work, check Photobucket for EdenSouluna, its the only photo i have uploaded...

Cheers

Your SCSI/RAID card is an IBM serveraid 3L accorinding to the part number on the picture. On a NF 5000 you have an onboard SCSI controller that you mention is deactivated and then I am assuming you have the serveraid 3L controlling the harddrives?
To start, there is a separate BIOS and drivers for the serverraid card that need to be loaded before the system will pick up the drives attached to it. Go to the IBM site ibm/com/support and type in serveraid for the search criteria. You will get lots of hits. You should be able to find the software matrix that contains all of the files and instructions needed to update the BIOS and drivers. You can also get the RAID manager that will help configure and maintain your RAID setup. You need to go through installing this first and hopefully that will address you issue. You can also probably still find the documentation on the 3L card there also.

Netfinity servers will work with version 7 and above. The version is actually more pertinant to the Se
