Need help, Core Speed dramatically changing on it's own.

I was getting a little bitter that my rig:

Q6600 G0 stepping
8800gt x2
4gig mem
blah blah

wasn't running Crysis as well as I would have liked. I was then looking into overclocking my processor and opened up CPU-Z and noticed that my Core Speed was going from 2400.1MHz down to 1600.0MHz and the Multiplier going from x9 to x6 like wise. It keeps jumping back and forth between the two. Why is it doing this?

That's called speedstep. It saves energy and heat. Unlike your triple-post...

What settings are you running the game and check to see if there are newer drivers out.

It wasn't my intention to "triple post", but there was a story behind it and I was just saying how one thing lead to the next which then lead to the discovery of the varying core speed. That is all. But thanks for the reply anyway. At least now I know it is normal.
