I7 920 match 975 with overclocking?

I'm considering getting an i7 920 and am curious if it can match performance with the 975.

the only difference i see is the clock speed and the bus speed

so technically i should not only be able to match but even exceed 975 performance, yes?

I've been running my 920 for almost a year now, and honestly, I have no reason yet to even considering OC'ing it

good to hear, ive got a 4870x2 and my e8600 @4.0 is such a bottleneck

If you are gaming at anything less than 1920x1200, or 2560x1600 in most titles, then you havnt even reached what the 4870x2 can do. Big video cards need big resolutions

1920x1200 on my 4870x1 on everything, and no issues at all (aside from the fact that the original MSI card I put in the system when I built it has crapped out, and I had to replace it; now running an XFX )

lol yes the 4870x2 is powerful, thats why i want to replace my cpu with something that will be commensurate to its abilities.


is it worth my money to get ddr3 modules while im at it or is the price tag still to high compared to any potential gains i would receive?

if I'm not mistake, all of your i7 motherboards will only take DDR3

dont forget that you cant plop in a I7 920 or I7 860 into your current motherboard.

You are looking at:
I7 CPU
I7 compatible motherboard
DDR3 Ram

Yep, and going with a 920 you need a 1366 board, but for say an 860 you need an 1156.

If you're gaming, go skt 1156 i5 quad, 1366 is for data intensive applications.

i7 is basically gives you HT, triple channel ddr3, fast CPU interconnect (which you won't use on a single CPU platform)

i5 gives you dual channel ddr3, fast PCIe connection

i5 will almost certainly be faster in anything other than raw mutlithreaded processing

The performance of i975 is the best in the market and it can be overclocked to 4 gz easily to meet your requirements. On the other hand i7 920 is also good and cheap compare to i7 975.

stating how much you are willing to spend would get you suggestions way faster ..
