Help me to decide a processor

I am planning to purchase a new desktop PC but I am confused as to which processor to choose. I know that there are two processors

Intel Core 2 Duo
Intel Core 2 Quad

Which one is better for a home PC? The vendor says they have both but I am confused.

Does these processors generate lot of heat? If so which one generates lot of heat.

I will not play games but will install Vista, Windows XP, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, Office 2007 and lot of other essential softwares.

Please suggest.

IMO Quad processors are just way overkill...just get a decent Core 2 Duo and you will not be sorry...i have a Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 in my laptop and it performs very well

I believe all desktop Intel Core 2 Duo's are 64 bit processors so it will run faster than mine...of course if your running 64 bit vista...which is gaining popularity

What is your motherboard? How much is your budget? I guess thats a better place to start

ok no game but server based software.. then go quad, something like the Q9550 or 9700 quad cores. stay away from the Q6XXX if possible as they run hot, are the older core technology and are not as powerful as the Q9xxx cores
