E4300 IHS Removal
Decided to get up the guts to do it. First thing first is that i haven't resolved a good way to cool it, but will work on that in the morning, cause it is nearly midnight here
Here is a pic of the specimen:
Most core 2 duos are soldered on and thus, the only way to really remove it is to heat it up to remove the solder. The E4300 however by looking around uses a thermal material. With this in mind, and sky high temps, and went for it, and got to work.
Here it is before a started. As you can see, all i have used is a stanley knife. For future purposes, the temp like this in the bios read at 57c!. Hence why i have decided to do this.
So i mucked about on my toledo first learning my cutting technique, and decided the best way is turning the blade about 45 degrees backwards and fourth in each corner. With a alot of light, a fan cooling me, a nice beverage and some patience, i got the thing off. wooooooooo!
here is my repeated procedure for each corner:
1) _
2) \
3) l
4) \
5) _
Because it won't go tight into the socket clip, i used some trusty blu tac for now. Keeps it in there well. Then i have just placed the stock air cooler on there. Then came the moment of truth. Will it actually boot. So i turned it on....
...Bam, boot screen, checked bios and temp read 59c, but the cooler is wobbling about and there is no pressure at all. I pushed down quickly and it drop down to 54c on the next reading. This section will continue tomorrow, when i will hopefully get the maze4 waterblock on it and fially get the temps down!
To finish of i will say that yes i still think the IHS is slanted and concave. Also the thermal material was comparable to the dry crusty stuff under most stock northbridge coolers. Now i don't know about you, but that doesn't get a thumbs up from me.
But yeah, it boots, and works into windows on that wobbling about, so tomorrow i will continue by finding a cooling solution. Any comments, questions, and ideas are welcome. I duno how many people have done this, so thought i would give a bit of detail. Looking forward to the comments on this, lol.

For the beverage question, depends on the time of day.
Upto 10pm would be bear or something alcoholic and cold. Seeming this is after 10pm, coke (caffeine ) and cold with ice cubes. For light i used a 10W desk lamp about 30cm (12") from where i was working.
Don't quite get the date part...Maybe because it is late.
I will run it in the morning, cause i don't trust this cooling technique, and for comparisons it needs to be on the other waterloop, which is bled right now and i can't be asked to do that!

Interesting thread. I look forward to seeing your next posts. As for starwarskid91's post about the date, he was just joking and picked a random date because he said he had a few questions

well it still isn't going. Logic would say the processor is dead, but anyway, lets go through what has happened.
Last night the processor booted 2 times out of two, and so i left it overnight, to deal with this morning.
Wake up this morning, and nothing. Fans spin, but not even the post LED's are doing anything today.
every now the then, the second dot lights up, adn i can't find out what that means. Also today the two led's on my x1900xt have come on, meaning there is a fault of some kind, and it isn;t getting any external power in. I tried on two different PSU's, and i tried another graphics card, so those are eliminiated. Also tested with other ddr2, so not that. Basically it is down to the cpu and motherboard.
Now would the processor not allow power to get to the graphics card in any form if it wasn't working?
And here is the other one. Would the processor be to blame if the waterblock is warming up like it used to?
Can't feel much heat of the northbridge however, which usally gets upto 60c with a 12cm fan over it.
I am gona try and get in touch with a mate, with a 795x chipset, so i can actually test the cpu and make it sure it is or isn't that. I pray it is still with us!

It looks to be dead
I decided i won't RMA it as that i see that as something when it isn't your fault. I purposely took it off, and i risked breaking it in the process. I have still got my athlon x2 4400+ to use till i nab another processor.
Looking intel cpu's up, i may wait a while for the new intel price cuts, and then scoop up a nice deal, but we will see.
Also i have got work today at pcworld. Yeah i am working with dumbass's, but the one advantage is i can now pick the stepping i want
So till then, looks like my machine will be taking a step back
