CPU Overheating issue

Hi all. I've recently fitted an LCD temperature display. I put the sensor on the CPU, which involved me removing the CPU fan and putting it underneath it. However, since I've done this my CPU seems to be running quite high ranging from 60-75 Celsius.
Now i know that's not a good thing. I was wondering what could have caused this and have since removed the sensor for the LCD display. The temperature is still very high.

Could it possibly be the thermal paste or something?

I would like as many views as possible on this. Thanks in advance to all who help. :S:S

Edit: The temperature for my CPU used to be in the 20's i believe.
It only started getting this high since i put that sensor in there.

That would be the favourite culprit

Take the heatsink off and clean both it and the CPU, and then put some new paste on the CPU (not too much!) and see if it makes a difference

Thanks for the quick reply, where is best to get the thermal paste. Are thee different types etc? Do small local computer stores usually sell it and roughly how much damage will it cause to my wallet?

Ah, well now, as with all things like this it really depends on what sort of quality you're after. Some pastes are 50p and will dry out over time and not give you great temps but will be perfectly serviceable, or there are more premium brands (Arctic Silver being the most prolific, but there are many more) which will cost you about £5 per small syringe but last for ages and get you maybe 5C lower temperatures under load. Maybe.

Frankly if you're running the CPU at stock speeds the generic silicone paste should do you just fine, but it's what you feel comfortable using.. And any computer shop should have some of it in stock

Just to add a little more info about the thermal paste.

Good thermal paste is usually worth the small investment.

Every time you remove the CPU heatsink you should look at applying fresh paste. Clean off all the old paste from both CPU and heatsink, apply a very small amount as too much can also build up a thermal gap.

Paste is meant to fill in the microscopic gaps between the surface of the CPU and heatsink (which are touching at their closest points) to allow better conductivity - not to add a layer between them.

You should be able to refit your temp monitor as well when you apply the new paste, do not be surprised when the temp is higher than 20 though.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do that sometime in the future then. Now what you said about the thermal paste filling in the small gaps, will having my sensor in there somewhere affect these small gaps?

What is the sensor like and where do your instructions so to put it. If it is meant to go between the cpu and heatsink and it covers the full contact area then paste both sides.

The sensor it just like a small metal pin type thing. Just looks like a normal thermal sensor to me. I have quite a few and i just wanted on of them as close to cpu as possible so i could see temperature.

I would not be putting it between the CPU and heatsink myself (I would put it as cose to that area as I could but not interfere with the CPU/Heatsink contact area) but I am not an expert on mounting third party CPU thermal probes, maybe someone else with more knowledge on that can jump in with their advice.

' I ve had my P4HT Processor for about half a year now and whenever I do anything big like converting video or burning a DVD it overheats. I've measured the temperature at arround 75 C while its working on something hard and while it is just idle arround 60 C. I have a top fan, side fan, montherboard fan, CPU Heatsink and fan, and I just installed a rear 120mm fan which dropped the temperature a few degrees. My CPU is still overheating, I am going to install 2 front fans but I'm not sure if that will help much. What should I do?

1) You should make your own thread for your own issues really
2)Strip it down and clear dust
3)check all pins or contacts on both the mobo and the cpu to make sure they are not bent or damaged
4)Apply some thermal paste and make sure your cpu and fans etc are mounted properly, Just 1 mm of the fan being out of place can make a lot of difference, it did with mine!
