so long as it's damp there shouldn't be any problem at all.

if it starts burning / melting the sponge onto the iron though, you may want to try something else (my school used to use wet paper towels ).

Not that I am aware of-- any heavy-duty sponge will work, as long as it's damp (not soaking, like some of the putzes did in my soldering lab).

i dunno if the sponges that have green scotch brite on one side are ok? i reckon the yellow sponge/foam will melt, havent tried tho.

i use a cheap general purpose "kitchen" sponge, the ones that get real hard when dry but go soft when wet. damp is all you need, but soaked is good too. we used to soak the hell out of our sponges when i was at a tv/radio shop, that way the sponge would last unitl lunch time, then we'd soak em again and it would last until hometime.

the only bad thing about soaking them is that it will cool your tip down more when you clean, so you have to wait like 10 seconds before you resolder. you can use this time to prepare your next component for soldering tho

You just don't want to use the scotch brite side-- it melts. As a matter of fact, the sponge I use now is one where the scotch brite side fell off.
