Connector Type

I am not sure this is the place to post this but I am looking for some help on connectors.

I need a way to mate 2 devices together. The daughter device will "plug" into a socket on the mother device. Very similar to how a car stereo head unit plugs into the stereo. My question is about the electrical connectors used in this type of application.

I am looking for a surface mounted connector that is 8 - 15 pole rated at approximately 400mA. The most important thing is that the connector is able to absorb any mis-alignment between the connector parts.

Something like my car stereo head unit connector would be ideal. This is a surface mounted plug standing up vertically from the PCB. It has 3mm contacts arranged on 2 sides. This plugs into a socket which has spring contacts, rather like a letter box with contacts on the top and bottom.

It may seem like a stupid question but does anyone know what this type of connector is called? I don't know if it's a header or a spring contact etc. IF anyone could help me source something similar I would be very grateful.

You're best bet is to contact a local electronics supplier with what you need,or maybe use google and see what type of hits you can obtain for either electronics connectors or maybe if you can name specifically what application this will be used for, IE: what products?
